What is success for England? Beating Iran? Drawing v USA? Beating Wales? Beating Senegal? England lost to the first stern test they met. How is that a success?
My point refers to tournament football, as long as we get through , that’s all that counts. Last 3 major tournaments Semi finalists, finalists and quarter finalists, not too shabby in my book, and hardly failure considering what preceded. Yes we need to push on, but at least we have a basis from which to do that.
I don’t disagree we need to push on and improve, my point is I don’t consider Southgate to have been a failure over his tenure, far from it.
It’s all about how you measure success. Same as with Lee Johnson. If you measure success by trophies then EVERYBODY including Southgate has failed and needs to be sacked asap. If you don’t win promotion or you don’t win a cup then you’re ****. That means all but 3 league managers are **** and every manager of their country’s club in the world deserves the sack - apart from the winner.
This should help. England successfully failed to beat Croatia in the semis and successfully failed to beat France in the quarter finals!! This has been troubling me. Do you think Gareth Bale is bald below that onion hairstyle??
I prefer England successfully reached the Semis in 2018 and successfully reached the Quarter finals 2022
Or if City got promotion via playoff’s, would that be success, as we’d have not actually won the league, or even came second ?
Read what I said I was tempted but I will resist and be true, it's R&W up to his little tricks again .
England are like Bristol City as they are always going to be much better next time. Thank goodness I was at Wembley in 1966 because I am now starting to believe that I will not be around long enough to see them do it again. Ah well there's always 2024. I really feel for Harry Kane but he should have walked away from taking a second penalty against his club team mate and left it to someone else. Those are the minute details that separate winning and losing.
Kane is team captain and penalty taker. I truly respect him for taking on board the responsibility for the second spot kick and it has nothing to do with the goalie being his team mate. Had it been, he shouldn’t have taken the first one!! He got it wrong in the cruellest of situations and that is his cross to bear.
