Didn't see any after match comments R&W, but if they said that, that's an incorrrect statement by these so called pundits. Any foul play resulting in a goal and/or directly enabling that goal can be retrospectively viewed if the incident was instrumental in that goal being scored. It doesn't have to be in either penalty area to be considered, and the foul on Saka fell into that category.
No complaints from me mate, I love modern times and what is being offered, I don't curse the modern age, I love it and take full advantage of whats being offered but I keep having to ask my son for advice on how to operate things, thanks to the good god above we have got young people to lead the way allowing those of us who wish to enjoy the benefits.
back in the day! Ref's had a daytime job and tended to be blind, had expenses and a love of the game.. and more often or not had a connection to the crowd. Nowadays they get paid over £30k a year plus expenses and are less connected to the crowd IMHO. We have seen very few " crowd" character ref's over the past decade maybe less than 5 Cant remember his name , but the bald headed one! [ who was as fit as a fiddle and could almost outrun some of the the aged players] was made to retire because of a "birthdate" he was brilliant. Now you seem to have the jobsworth's of varying degree's of mentallity [ bookingwise/ free flowing/ etc ] and it affects the game.
I have nearly always been self taught! [ excepting school or work related compulsary training courses ]. Know what you mean WIZ grandkids often "help" .. GD asked if she could use my computer to do an essay or something for home work. I watched her using my word programme! whoa I said how did you do that about half a dozen times ... she hastily tried to show me .. but when she had finished SHE SHOWED ME! properly!
When you consider where we were when Southgate took over to where we are now it’s chalk and cheese, despite our so called “golden generation “, when you hear previous players, Lineker, Southgate, Neville, and pretty much every player from that generation saying how well he’s doing, I think they are in a position to know better than us. As much as I’d like them to “go for it” all the time tournament football isn’t like that, we’ve got better at it than we’ve been for donkeys years and much of that is down to Southgate. We went toe to toe with possibly the best team in the world, we didn’t look out of place, we’re arguably the better team for large periods , and with a bit more luck and decisions going our way, we could on another night won. There can only be one winner and yesterday wasn’t our day, that’s football.
VAR has a limited range of absolute authority - mostly it's advisory to the match official. Only such things as computer enabled geometric offside decisions are VAR absolute. Most revisions are still subject to the referee's pitchside review as to whether the incident highlighted would have altered the eventual outcome. It's still the referee's decision post pitchside review - but he should at least have been asked to look at the "Saka foul" and decide as to whether it was a critical element in them going on to score. The ball was dead after it had gone in the England net so there was no element of game interuption. Once again, they copped out.
Out at the QF is failure. Mr Southgate can get past the Senegals, Wales but is beaten by Croatia, beaten by Italy, beaten by France and this is failure. There is a consistency of failure versus the top nations present. England had players that are really good enough to win one of those tournaments. Time for Mr Southgate to go and for England to kick on to success.
He is far and away the most successful national manager since Sir Alf, we’ve had equally good players in the past and not done as well. I agree we need to kick on, but feel we’re on the right track, time to keep a cool head, not panic and change for the sake of change, if he agrees to continue I’d be surprised if we change him personally.
Its all advisory! they are able to do what the ref cant... look at different angles .. in slow motion and then advise through his ear peice no foul or foul .. ref goes to screen when VAR says there is cause for concern would you like to see for yourself! What we dont know is when he comes back from screen and says no foul whether he has seen the possibility it was but has it in his head leading up to the event there was no need to change his mind ... instance was last defender causes a foul and should be red carded??? ... penalty yesterday was last man and only got a yellow!..?
What is success? Mr Southgate does not beat his peers. England beat a declining Germany during the Euros and Mr Southgates record? Bested by Italy, Croatia and France. Mr Southgate loses consistently against the top tier nations. Opportunity to be the successful winners is lost.
Last three tournaments semi finalists, losing finalists to penalties and losing quarter finalists is a closely fought game against arguably the best team in the world, when for large parts we were the better team. Yes we have to get better, but compared to where we were when he took over to say he’s not been successful is a bit harsh imo.
It's not all advisory at all. The VAR acronym is officially the video assitant referee and as such "assists" the referee, but it has ruling powers over certain matters. Offside is either offside or not dependant upon computer measurement and graphics - the referee has no say in it. Also suspected handball in the box whether intentional or accidental which enables the scoring of a goal or preventing one being scored is also a VAR decision.
I think its all like fishing. Southgates gets through the qualifiers against the little minnows, gudgeon and bleak with the odd roach and bream mixed in. Can get past a predator perch but then is bitten against the sterner tests of up the food chain pike!! He has never beaten the top sides those pike at tournaments, and he probably never will
Things would be clearer if the conversation between the refs and VAR were transmitted live. We would then know who made the decisions and the rationale
England last 10 results, v France - 1-2 - Loss v Senegal - 3-0 Win v Wales - 3-0 Win v USA - 0-0 - Draw v Iran 6-2 - Win v Hungary 0-1 Loss v Germany 1-1 Draw v Italy 0-0 - Draw v Hungary 0-4 Loss v Italy - 0-1 Loss 3 win, 3 draw, 4 loss Not a bad set of results but not the best team in the world form. ( check this out if you wish, I am away from my computer and on my phone at which I'm not to efficient)
Winning against? Losing to? Look at the stature. International football tournaments = the result is the ONLY thing that matters. France had a good few minutes v England to score twice and to win. You need to find a way to win nothing else matters and France are better at that than Southgates England. England lost again ... And failed again.
I don’t believe a semi final, final and quarter final in he last 3 tournaments from the position we were in when he took over represents failure, in you scenario every team are failures other the ones who wins the tournament.
