When there's about 8 million group games, it's a little bit slim pickings. But yes, you're right, there'll be some shocks (such as this game).
Not just the result, but I can see one of the minnows come out and play attacking football. They may get ripped apart but I can see someone like Curacao going **** it and just go for it.

Point really being, doesn't feel like there's much jeopardy in the group stages for any of the medium to big sides.

This was always my biggest problem with this tournament format. The chance of a big side going out in the groups now is basically nil and there's some pathetically weak groups.

Group F is where I could potentially see a shock and Holland not going through. They should go through but I could see a scenario where they don't make it through.

One of the big nations will implode. My money is on Brazil.

I'm backing Brazil to go a long way and possibly even win it. Not actually looked at their squad mind lol.

But we recently had 3 tournaments in a row where the holders went out in the groups. Can you really see that happening again under this format?

Yeah true. But there's one extra game of knock-out football to navigate now though, which could possible see an extra couple of favoured teams get eliminated earlier than expected.

I'm not totally against the bigger format. FIFA obviously aren't doing it to give smaller countries the opportunity to mix with the big boys but it is a happy byproduct of their greed IMO. It's a world event after all, not solely for elite teams and now nearly every footballing country get's their chance. I see it like the early rounds of the FA Cup, sometimes a non league club gets their day in the sun and everyone loves it when they do. I accept that some games will be a poor standard but everyone can choose which games to watch. Some fans will want to watch anything because it's football*, it's not for me but I don't think it's such a bad thing.

* Saints average home attendance 2024/25 was 30,000 to see 1 win and 15 losses. <laugh>
