When we reach the position that the host Country decides which fans can attend, which officials can be part of the team and, now, who can referee the matches it is no longer a World Cup. If I was granted a wish it would be that the whole thing is a financial disaster which bankrupts FIFA. I just hope I have the willpower to boycott the whole fiasco.

So opening 2-0 win for Mexico.
3 reds (1 for Mex, 2 S.A) 2 of which were questionable to say the least. If that's going to be the consistent standard of ref. carding to be expected, there will definitely be squad rotation throughout the tournament!

Ali Ahmed named as a substitute for tonight's opening match in Canada, which sees host country Canada take on Bosnia Herzegovina in Toronto. HT Canada 0:1 BH, a deserved lead for the Bosnians, Lukic the goalscorer reacting brilliantly when the ball was headed on at pace from a driven corner.
Canada have had chances but failed to convert them. Tailor-made for Ahmed to achieve hero status if he gets on in the second half. No problems with the refereeing so far in this one (ref from Argentina).

A point the least Canada deserved, pleased for them. Grew into the game after early nerves settled. Thought Ahmed impressed when he came on. Seemed to have recognised that crossing high into the box wasn't working, and that something else was required. Buchanan before him seemed incapable of that.

Speaking of Ahmed...does anyone know how his surname is meant to be pronounced? Ah-med, AH-med, Akh-med?

Watching US vs. Par match, 3-0 HT, Paraguay so, so poor. Think freshly relegated Barrow or Harrogate would best them.

English commentators tend to say something similar to Arm med which is Anglicised pronunciation..this vid is close to what I heard in the Middle East (Bahrain) for circa 10 years, but not sure what Ali prefers...

BBC commentator last night was going with Akh-med. There's usually a video produced by each national team with players pronouncing their own names as a guide for commentators. I can't find the Canadian video unfortunately, although it was definitely filmed

I thought he played very well when he came on, gave BH a real headache to consider and really went for it. Looking fwd to seeing (?) Toure/Kenny in tomorrow's games. I have a mental Sunday schedule here in Oz: 5am Qatar vs Switzerland, 8 am Brasil vs Morocco, 11 am Haiti vs Scotland, 2pm Australia vs Turkiye. Might miss the earlier one but get on the sofa for Brasil Morocco - looking fwd to seeing how Morocco set up for this one.

Weren't you Juffair Canary in yester year? I was there (HMS Juffair, though I was RAF) in the 1960's.

Kenny and Mo on parade tomorrow, watchable times for me.

Scotland Goalkeepers position is a bit dire. They have Gunn who hasn't really played a game last season, Craig Gordon who's 43 and Liam Kelly, who I don't think has played a game in a long time.
