The quarter finals look very straight forward:
France will beat Uruguay as they have sufficient attacking options against an opponent who only appear to have two. I think they will be playing a semi-final against their neighbours, Belgium, because most of the interest in the current Brazil team seems to concern Neymar’s efforts to win the Best Actor in a Leading Role award; and I would rather side with the European’s goalkeeper and defenders. The media keep peddling nonsense about how Brazil are only playing in second gear but there is no evidence that they are not stuck in it.
FIFA swapped the designation of the other quarter finals so that if the hosts make the semi-final they will be the home team; however, I think the Russian dream will be ended by Croatia. They rode their luck against Denmark but their quality players will tell here although it may go beyond ninety minutes – Vladimir will be in the VAR booth! Sweden play a totally conventional 4-4-2 and lack any dynamism, so it will be England visiting the Lizhniki, trying to book a return visit four days later.
