As said just now elsewhere, picked up grandaughters from school today so didn't watch the game. Believe it was 5 - 0 in the end.

Christ if I have to watch Putin milking it over 64 games (is it?) I may go and shoot him myself. Particularly cringeworthy last night owing to the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the VIP box. Hardly best friends in the real world are they? You'd have thought it was young love. Given Putin's shirt-off homoerotic poses for the camera, perhaps it is.

You can guarantee that this was one handshake where a brown envelope didn't slip discreetly from one hand to the other.....especially when the final score was 5-0.

Putin is probably richer than the Saudi Crown Prince.

Been watching both afternoon games today....neither up to Div 1 standard....pretty boring....hope this evenings game is better.

32 teams means too much dross....isn't the next lot going to be 48 teams....heaven forbid.

    No dross tonight.....Spain...1...Ronaldo 2... H/T.....good game .

I hope Gareth Southgate has sent his England team to bed early with a cup of cocoa....they shouldn't be allowed to watch this it might scare them a little.

Tom Daley would have failed to finish in the top 10 tonight.

Sensible thought they out dived Tom Daley....didn't see much of that to be honest.....stone dead penalty I thought for Ronaldo.

Actually a lot of people have been out diving Tom Daley recently from the 10 metre individual events.

Iran were shocking in that regard. Biggest joke is that they were desperately trying to run the clock down at 0-0 and were then horrified when 6 mins were added, only to win it themselves in the 95th minute!

    A funny old game.

Well it's all about opinion I suppose. I thought Ronaldo dived for his penalty and dived again for his free kick. There were numerous other divers in that game as well. Watched the France v Australia game this morning and the diving in that one was even worse. Watched the match this evening Croatia v Nigeria. There was plenty of diving in that one too. The worst offender was Moses who is one of Chelsea's players. How he stayed out of the book for it I just don't know. The number of free kicks was rediculous. At least the Ref gave a penalty for the sexual assault that happened when the Nigerian decided he wanted to cuddle the Croatian. There should be more penalties given for that and it would stop. I cannot stand cheating in any sport and it is being ruined by players doing it all the time, Refereees falling for it and pundits making excuses for it and trying to pretend it really happened and was justified. The voice of reason this morning was Mark Lawrenson who called it as it was everytime.

I'm always ready to see a dive every time someone goes down but Ronaldo was definitely brought down. I agree about Moses and Griezmann's penalty was a dive, VAR or not. Not enough to bring him down there.

What's all this with referees waving their arms about at corners etc? It's happening everytime and yet we haven't seen a single penalty for holding or pushing. The ref in Costa Rica v Serbia was looking directly at one blatant one and did nothing so it's all hot air.
