well, it comes from years and years at school of conjugating verbs, particularly doing weekend homework, though I don’t remember being told exactly what conjugating actually was. Another prime example was our French teacher making us remember exactly that ‘the pluperfect of avoir means “had” ’ although I was totally unsure as to what a pluperfect actually is or was
