I think on guitars it’s generally a case of horses for courses, I think Fender spend huge amounts on sponsorship. I have to say though that Richard Thompson, David Gilmour, and Yngwie Malmsteen all seemed to manage to get an unbelievable sound out of them live when I saw them.
 
Very true PH...remember seeing Dave Gilmour doing an acoustic set.. just him and his Martin. D35 (I think)...astonishing.
