Before electro magnetic devices were around, a paravane was streamed from the bow of a ship, one on each side, semi submerged they would drag a tethered acoustic mine to the surface, where if would destroyed by gunfire, from the length of the paravane cable it would be some 100 metres away from the deploying ship
