Syrup (my Mum used to make a simple plain white sponge cake and we would laden it with spoonfuls of Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup distributed onto the cake from a great height - "Out of the strong came forth sweetness" I seem to recall on the green can, with the dead lion on it)
