I was at that gig too Rogue they were immense. I'm sure I still have a bootleg of it somewhere on cassette They were a brilliant band that never fulfilled their potential in my opinion. I never thought they were half as good once Wallinger left. I remember being hugely disappointed by the Fisherman's blues album at the time. I thought it sounded like something recorded by the punters of the Viccy bar. Over the years I have accepted that it is a fairly decent album, but not a patch on any of the first three. It kind of ended it for Mike Scott really.
I liked fishermans blues - though it certainly was a change in direction - it was the one after that ... room to roam ? that caused me and the waterboys to part ways ... I think I was willing to go along with one folky kind of album but two in a row with none of the big music anywhere in sight was a fiddle too far. Some of his later solo stuff is good but always patchy I think. If you have a shred of decency in you you will get that cassette onto cd and post it on youtube
In my list top 10 albums is 'This Is The Sea',Fisherman's Blues and Room to Roam different and love the former, still play it when I have a few pints on me.Just a question is Mike Scott more revered in Ireland or in Scotland?
Like you the one after Fisherman's Blues finished me with them. It had a cover with a dodgem on it I think. Some of Fishermans Blues was okay, but then you got ****e like, "A bang on the ear" which manages to out twee even Macca Patchy is a good description of his output since 1986 really. I don't possess the kit to turn the tape into MP3's or whatever. Anyway I'm a Rangers fan so I have no decency in me Next time you're back in Glasgow give me a shout and I will meet you for a beer and give you a copy of it if you want. Can't speak for the Irish Mick, but I don't think he's revered in Scotland. He has a fairly loyal fanbase and still plays in relatively smaller venues like the Glasgow Concert hall. I do have a slight admiration for him in that after This is the Sea they looked like they would be massive. He follows it up with the wee fiddle playing album and kind of disappears. He loves Neil Young and I remember thinking at the time he's trying to do the Neil Young/Lou Reed career self destruct thing. Only thing is you have to be kind of initially successful to do that. At the time they had not sold a lot of records the general public's perception of them was possibly as one hit wonders after "The Whole of the Moon" had charted. When their label mates (the far inferior U2) went stratospheric in the late 80's it brought this song from their first album to mind for me. To my mind Scott summed up his entire career in this track. A self fulfilling prophesy?
Splendid idea, unfortunately Im not that long back from glasgow and probably wont be back for ... dunno a year or so maybe ... dont leave that tape in the sunlight

It's when he starts making up his own verses like Hey Paloma give me your aroma that makes it.

Not a big fan of The Boss, but Atlantic City is one mighty, mighty song - in fact I think Nebraska is the only one of his albums Ive got, and it does get a spin every now and then. I got into this guy via getting into Bert Jansch, the album has the occasional " A Mighty Wind " folk histrionics but overall rather splendid I think
I looked through the thread and noticed several reposts Atlantic City was one of them. Nebraska is an excellent album in my opinion. Listened to some of the Jackson C Frank one. SOme of it is quite impressive. I had never heard of him before.
