FFS when will you understand that a lot of us are just not interested. The standard is a joke. I watched the first game on TV and the playing standard was akin to Pub Football. Since then all I have seen are the so called highlights. We allegedly scored the goal of the tournament - I laughed!! The ball was bent the wrong way in that the shot was bending towards the GK but somehow the GK failed to keep it out. I think in the same game we scored a headed goal from a corner when an opponent positioned on the post just watched the ball creep in between her and the post she was supposed to be guarding. I saw the two goals we scored in the last game. If you ignore that fact that 2 defenders fell over for no apparent reason the first goal was well taken but the second!! A looping header straight at the GK went over her head because she wasn't tall enough and jumped at the wrong time. Like Thai I find the discussion on TV standards far more interesting.
So, the quality of ladies football is not as good as men's. Well, big surprise. But why be so antagonistic in what that are trying to achieve? Our ladies are in the semi final of the WWC of football but some still decide to slag them off.
Thought I was a lone voice. The girls are doing great and we should get behind them, like we should with anyone representing us.
The standard i have seen is considerably higher than pub football. I've seen little use of long ball. The players don't seem to have the physicality to press so the players get more time on the ball. I've quite enjoyed watching some it. We shouldn't be comparing it to the mens game. Its really not the same, in fact, like tennis there is great opportunity for it to focus far more on ability than the mens game.
It's not for me, as much as I wish them well as they are representing our nation, I would no more watch it than England at a crown green bowls world cup (Do they have one???). As has been said above the Women's game should not be compared to the men's game. They are very different. I just think that the difference renders the beautiful game a little less beautiful (Probably more attractive than a Pulis vs MM match but so is the prospect of prolonged interrogation by the Spanish inquisition!) Bah! p.s. Damn yet again no Comfy chair from cardinal Biggles!
Sorry but there's no way I'll be staying up until the early hours to watch it. I wish them well but women's football is all a bit Meh as far as I'm concerned.
At the risk of starting up the sort of debate we had about the Olympics where my views were as welcome as a wet fart to some people, let me explain my views. Sport to me is like TV programmes. If I'm interested I watch - if not I don't. There are many sports where we have Club and National teams netball, cycling, tiddlywinks, hockey, rounders, rowing, tug of war, lacrosse to name but a few. I have no interest in them so don't watch them whether they are playing for love, money or medals. Netball, for example, is covered by Sky. I haven't watched netball since I was at school and watched it for all the wrong reasons. It is no interest to me and so I don't watch it on Sky whether it is a Club or International game. What about the Sports I like. Golf - I have been to many professional tournaments and watch it for hours on TV. If I'm on holiday do I go to the local course and watch the members play for the Captains Cup - No. It's the same game played by people with less skill, ability and physical prowess than the standard I like to watch. Cricket - I have been to Test matches and County games and watch it on TV. I have not seen a local game since my Brother played for Lowestoft in the 60's. Same game but played with less skill, ability and physical prowess than the standard I like to watch. Football - I watch countless hours on TV and as well as NCFC usually attend a game in all divisions from Premiership to Conference. I cannot recall the last non league game I watched. I live 100 yards from where my village team play but have never watched a game. Same game but played by people with less skill, ability and physical prowess than the standard I like to watch. Womens Football. I watched the first game of the current tournament because it was on the television at the Pub. I thought the standard was very poor. Despite no pressure on the ball they seemed to find it difficult to string a move together especially if they were more than 5 yards apart and the concept of pushing the ball into space for another player to run on to seemed alien to them. Since then I have only seen goals on sports bulletins and the majority, if not all, seemed to arise because of deplorable basic defending and/or bad goalkeeping. It is an intriguing argument that I should consider it a different game but I can't. To me it is the same game played by people with less skill, ability and physical prowess that the standard I like to watch. I wish them well. They are obviously enjoying themselves and doing their best and for their sake of the players and supporters I hope they win it. The chances however of me attending a match in the future are virtually non existent and the chances of me watching it on TV are no more likely than me watching netball, NFL or the Tour de France.
I'd sooner just go down the beach!!!! Or then again, maybe not when you see what some women attempt to squeeze into!!!! <getscoatemoticon> Good point 1950 and I haven't watched any of the competition either.
I would suggest you look at some of the other ladies teams, the standard presently varies greatly. In addition the interest in womens football is looking at the differences and I find the intent to play football to be quite high, it seems higher than at League One (and most definitely Ipswich Town) level in the mens game. This is why I am not being negative about it and I hope it develops along that path. Incidently I find it very strange to be dismissive of the ball being played to feet (not into space, one of the reasons English football is as bad as it is), I'd have thought this would be paramount to developing the game. It actually reminds me alot of World Cup clips from games in the 60's because of the space the players have.
I fail to understand the cynicism here. If it isn't for you, then don't watch it. For me, women's football is a developing game. Compared to some of the tedium I've watched in the men's world cup, it is competitive and animated and very well worth watching. As for the shirt swapping jokes, these are at the same level of patronisation as Sepp Blatter's remarks about shorter, tighter fitting shorts.
I love watching any standard of football, even kids kicking around in the park, there ai nothing wrong with watching and enjoying the ladies, they are generally very dedicated to the game! Just because I make the odd flippant remark do not write me off as a know nothing! I'm sure many of you would be astounded at my lifetime achievements!
Don't take it to heart, Dave. It's a small part of your contributions on here, but it just hit a Sepp Blatter moment for me.
