‘Wolves are 18 months ahead of us’, says QPR boss - QPR - London 24

Queens Park Rangers' manager Neil Warnock
‘Wolves are 18 months ahead of us’, says QPR boss

Ian Cooper, QPR correspondent Friday, September 16, 2011
    12:45 PM

Saturday’s hosts have plenty of top players according to Warnock

Neil Warnock has hailed Saturday’s opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers as a shining example of how a Premier League club can survive and become a stable Premier League club.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves, who were promoted to the top flight in May 2009, only escaped relegation back to the Championship by a single point on the final day of last season.

Built they built on that survival with a number of eye-catching signings this summer, including Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara and the £7 million capture of Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson, and have made a promising start to this campaign, with seven points from a possible 12.

That, coupled with financial security and a stadium capacity of almost 28,000, has convinced Rs boss Warnock that they are the team to emulate.

“Wolves are a team that’s 18 months in front of us really,” admitted Warnock. “They’ve had to go through a similar situation to what we’re going through, and now Mick’s moved on a level and bought top players; the likes of [Kevin] Doyle, to take them to the next level. I look on with envy at Doyle. I made offers for him over the years but never quite made it.

“I think the club have done very well off the field. [Chief Executive] Jez Moxey and the chairman have supported Mick and done it in the right way.

“We’re not anywhere near that level, but that’s where we want to be.

“There’s a lot of good clubs that have got good grounding now, and Wolves is one of them. Yes they might have just clung in there by the skin of their teeth [last season], but they’ve moved on again, been supported in the boardroom, the signings.

“They have got a good stadium now and are run well off the field, so that is the way forward for them.”

Warnock also revealed that a teenage McCarthy used to clean his boots when the two were at Barnsley during the late 70s, with the two men remaining friends ever since.

“I’ve got a lot of time for Mick, he’s seen all the ups and downs in football,” added Warnock.

Warnock and new QPR owner Tony Fernandes have insisted that survival is QPR’s sole target this season, with anything else a bonus, but although Warnock has accepted that his side may receive some lessons on their travels, he says the recent influx of signings has made them a stronger side.

“That’s where you want to be when you come up; you’ve got to stay up and then try to stabilise. You’d love to take the next step, but you can’t run before you walk.”

“We’ve got to go everywhere now and try and win games,” added the boss. “Away from home, when you look at the two Manchester teams, they’re formidable really.

“But it’s nice to know that at least if you’re going to be losing 7-2 you’re not the worst!”

DERRY: A 'NO-HOLDS-BARRED' CLASH! Posted on: Fri 16 Sep 2011

R's midfield general Shaun Derry says that he expects Saturday's clash with Wolves at Molineux to be a 'no-holds-barred' affair.

The 33 year-old has started the season in fine form, keeping his place in the side despite an influx of new players in the summer transfer window.

In an exclusive interview with www.qpr.co.uk ahead of Rangers' journey north, Derry said: "We're expecting a difficult game - Wolves have had a good start to the season.

"They've been in the Premier League for a number of years now.

"Wolves have gradually established themselves as a top-flight side, just as Stoke City have, and they're the types of teams that you've got to try and emulate.

"Mick McCarthy is very similar to Neil Warnock, in terms of expecting hard work and 100 per-cent commitment as a minimum from his players.

"I'm sure that when you look at the pair of them on the touchline on Saturday, you'll see that they are similar types of characters in the way that they approach the game.

"It's going to be a no-holds-barred fixture, but it's one that we're looking forward to."

QPR go into the weekend on the back of Monday night's stalemate with Newcastle, and Derry continued: "We put in a good performance.

"It would have been nice to have got the three points, but we'll be looking to get some more on the table on Saturday.

"Everybody gelled straight away. That's testament to the quality of the boys that have been brought in.

"There was a massive amount of enthusiasm surrounding the place on Monday night and it was a performance that everyone was proud of."

Derry added: "I was pleased with my own performance - I've been happy with my form so far in the Premier League.

"I was also pleased when we brought the six new players in. It's been good to mix with them.

"Clearly, when you look over your shoulder and see the bodies that are around you, you know that you're going to get top performances from certain individuals."

Derry also insists that the R's need go to Molineux with a clear game plan if they expect to get a result.

"You can't be blasé about it," he added. "We've got to go there with a game plan.

"But we'll make sure between now and Saturday that we have that.

"Each year, their squad is getting stronger. When they can go and spend several million pounds on a centre-half (Roger Johnson), it shows that they're coming on leaps and bounds.

"They're the kind of opponents that we're going to come up against week in, week out and it's going to be difficult.

"You've got to be hard to beat away from home and can't leave yourself exposed - that applies to any league that you play in."

If ever there was a game that didn't need a young referee who loves throwing cards around...

Well said Nelly. I've always liked Clubs that build from the bottom, take it step by step and are well run. There are a host of mid-sized Clubs in the Top-Flight that have no divine right to be there yet are there because they've done things right. Bolton, Fulham, Wolves even Wigan etc. Stoke are the best example. They are the template for Clubs like ours in the small to mid-sized bracket.

I hope we beat them with a monumentally scrappy goal in the first couple of minutes and then just hold out for a 1-0.

Then after Alan Shearer's had his full of regurgatating every other pundits nonsense about how we're gona struggle all season; BHAM!! we beat Villa 3-1 next Sunday

    Team news.
QPR: Kenny - Young Ferdinand Gabbidon Traore - Derry Faurlin - SWP Taarabt Barton - Bothroyd. No real surprise there. Only debate seems to be Bothroyd or Campbell.
Wolves: Hennessey - Stearman Johnson Berra Elokobi - Jarvis Henry O'Hara Kightly - Ward - Doyle.
