I'm not a techy so this might seem like a really stupid ****ing question but can you have both Windows and Linux running on the same laptop?

Yes you can either set up a dual boot or with puppy run it within Windows from a flash drive or DVD.....in fact most linux distros can be run from a DVD without installing on your PC/Laptop....a good idea before going the dual boot route....see if you like it first

What irritates me is that when I use Windows Update they automatically tick to update to Windows 10 yet it's hidden away in optional updates.

Windows 10 now downloaded, laptop is about 2 weeks old and now takes longer to start up than my ****ty banged up 4 year old laptop I replaced it with. Not so impressed thus far

Been running Windows 10 on an oldish laptop since da.
one, it runs better than Windows 7 for me, never tried Windows 8 to make a comparison. You can adjust privacy settings during setup or after setup to ensure you don't share wifi passwords with friends or whatnot. I would use Linux all the time myself for security reasons but compatability with things has always been an issue with Linux so I just use that for browsing or watching dodgy streams( I dual boot with Windows)
Read paper other day that said windows 10 takes pics from your saved pics and makes a screen saver from them

****ing bastard windows 10 update restarted laptop and took near 15 mins to update midway through 1st half of Fulham match, missed Elmo's goal and got bollocked by my mum and my wife for swearing at my laptop for the full 15 mins. ****ing windows 10!

Lots of concern over privacy on this thread. Anyone read a book called The Circle by Dave Eggars? It's a 2013 novel about an internet company taking over lives. A light, entertaining story but seeing what Google and Microsoft are up to these days regarding collection of personal data it's definitely worth a read.
Yeah I read it last year. Excellent how it portrays the company that subverts the usual standards of privacy and personal identity that people have accepted for most of their lives. Some of the slogans - 'Secrets are Lies', 'Privacy is Theft' and 'Caring is Sharing'. Symbolic of the creeping capture of most of our personal identities.
Needless to say, I have not upgraded to Windows 10 and I will not do until most of the bugs and glitches have been eradicated.

Just dragging this back up as I've just got round to looking at it & my VAIO is telling me I can't update it until October/November depending on my system. As it's originally on Windows 8, which I like, but has been updated to 8.1.
