I perposely bought a cheap Win 8.1 tablet just to see what all the fuss was about, I read a lot of techie stuff and the arguments for and against Win 8 or 8.1 are as heated as football threads. So my Hipstreet 7" was tested and I quite like the 8.1 version of Windows but the tablet is absolutely useless as it has only 8GB memory and once the usual stuff is loaded there is no space to save anything else. On top of that you cannot transfer apps or whatever to an SD card which is utter tripe, so although I liked my experience with Win 8.1 for all practical purposes the tablet is useless.

I got a notification at the bottom of my desktop ...... doesn't happen till 29th July so plenty of time yet. Might happen when windows searches automatically for upgrades.

That is very likely how it'll happen to those who have reserved.

    It's because of updates.

I updated my Windows 7 laptop 2 days ago and it appeared today.

I haven't needed to use my Windows 8.1 desktop in a while and when I turned it on today to check for the icon it wasn't there. I did an update on it and lo and behold the icon was there.

I'm by no means a tekkie and have had 7 for years since I bought me laptop. I've got the icon on me bar but do I order or not?

    All advice greatly received.

Ordering it doesn't mean you have to use it. It will download but after that it's up to you.

I plan on taking the download(s) and then sitting on them until I start to see live reviews. I don't download new iO's on release day for the same reason.

I will do the same. I have reserved it so there is no problem with ticking the box Rover. It is your choice as to whether you install it or not.

It's free. It will be downloaded and installed only if you explicitly accept the conditions and agree to upgrade. Knowing MS you'll get prompted to back up stuff beforehand (good idea, in fact, if you have important stuff on your PC and you dont have it backed up, do it now, I mean it, do it. NOW.)

Come 29th July, you can choose to have the free upgrade installed or not.

    No mystery, no tricks.

If you're a little unsure, you can wait a few days, most problems will be reported online instantly, but its a free upgrade to a better interface and infrastructure.
