Yeah, he was a decent bloke, another one treated like ****e by the mags. The fans used to call him McFool.

Missed this news. RIP. Like others have said a good bloke all round. He gave Gazza his debut and launched his career.

Yep. McFaul was a long serving coach, well liked and well respected, but treat like **** by the board who regularly sold his better players without generally replacing them. The fans treat him like **** because he wasn't a big name and had taken over after being caretaker manager when Jack Charlton quit, so they looked down on him. They always wanted him replaced and eventually got their way when they struggled at the start 1988/89 season, despite McFaul generally having them established as a mid table side under his watch. The fact that they replaced him with Jim Smith, "the bald eagle", who in truth was a journeyman manager who's best successes were getting a heavily invested Oxford United promoted to the first division, being runners up in the league cup to Oxford in 1986 and finishing 5th in 1988 in the first division, the same season the mags finished 8th. The fact that QPR won a lot of points at home due to the plastic pitch they played on at the time that caused loads of problems for visitors to adapt to was probably ignored. But, Smith had better publicity and an image, sk the fans liked that.

Seems NUFC failed to honour the bloke at the weekend which upset some of their older fans.
This isn't a dig at Newcastle just wondering if only the present and future count these days.

Sadly I think that applies to a lot of newer fans of a lot of clubs theses days. They don't know the history properly of their own clubs, only relatively recent history, so they'll be a lot who won't know who he was. You can blame the media for it, as at times it feels like football was only invented in 1992 when the Premier League started and anything before that is barely mentioned.
