it may be why its called the memorial stadium, but the only covenant made is with the gates/plaque. thats the only bit that has been listed. not the stadium itself. if the gates/plaque was going to be knocked down then i would be sickened too as that is listed and thats where the remembrance is held. thats the actual memorial site. i am not denying the stadium is not called what it is for what it is. im saying the gates/plaque is the memorial and the focus point of all to do with those who died. on a side note, it wont be just sainsburys. it will be a mixed developement. sainsburys will announce shortly their plans for the site. the gates/plaque will be a very well looked after as it will still be used on rememrance day etc. it wont be left by trolly and recycling bins as suggested by some 82ers on otib site.
just to add to natch point, 100% of all city fans i know were disgusted by the way the plaque was treated by the numpties who did that. city fans did very well to fund the clean up. like wiz link, bristol was united after that incident.
So there you have it fellas, you've read the arguments for and against, whether THE MEMORIAL STADIUM is a memorial or not. Turns out that anyone who thought THE MEMORIAL STADIUM is a memorial was wrong Who knew eh?
' Opened in September 1921 as a home for Bristol Rugby Club, the Memorial Stadium - then known as the Memorial Ground - was dedicated to the memory of rugby union players from the city that had been killed during World War I. And now the Memorial Stadium - home to League 1 side Bristol Rovers - is a focus for the wider Bristol community around Remembrance Sunday with services of remembrance held at the ground's Memorial Gates.' Taken from the link and I think it answers both sides of the discussion but it is the ground that is the original memorial...
wiz, now you know yourself that using facts will get you nowhere when debating things with Private...
It doesn't matter how you try to dress this up or flap around at it. The stadium is and always was intended as a memorial to the war dead, Who would possibly believe the gates were put there as a memorial at a stadium called the 'memorial stadium' as "a focus point" Sorry it wont wash. This does not however excuse the former board of Bristol Rugby club for their complete ineptitude in allowing this situation to become possible.
Biggest mistake they ever made was allowing the pikeys anywhere near The Memorial Ground, the clause that was put in was foolhardy in the extreme given who they were dealing with. That said, who would have thought that a few years down the line that Rovers would have considered selling up and further sullying their already awful reputation?
Dunford owns the Memorial Stadium Co,it's him that Sainsbury will give the monies too,BRFC like Bristol Rugby just pay rent... It's 1 big con after another.....
if you call using lines from wiki as 'facts' then that sums you lot up. as for bristol rugby, im sure they know they made the right decision. they wouldnt of been able to afford to get a stadium to meet rugby regulations. we have invited them to come with us and play in a 20,000 all seater. they want in. they wouldnt have that if they didnt let the 'pikeys in'.
At the end of the day these are probably all moot points anyway, they've been 'getting a new ground' for the last 20 years
With UWE and the Counsil sticking their investment in how much of the new stadium will Rovers own? Back renting at least half me thinks?
UWE and the Counsil are not giving up that land and putting their money in for nothing. I know Rovers are always strappe for a few pennies, I suspect within the next decade they will end up defulting on payments and losing the their share. I trust my missus with money more than the Rovers board. I know this is pretty much a worst case scenario for the Gas but the idea of Bristol City playing in front of 30k in the Premiership, while Rovers play non league football at Twerton sounds more realistic now than it did this time last year. The worst thing for that lot is if you had to guess which of those two things were more likly you would be hard pushed to pick.
Hello all! I was Mike on the old 606, and I couldn't stay away from the endless discussions on how great a player LJ is, so I joined here! Anyway, I have a confession to make... When I was a student over the last three years at UWE I was involved with some of the student consultancy of the new campus (it seems that few students cared about it). Two points that I addressed regarding how the new land was used was. 1) As UWE lacks a Medical School and Frenchay is closing down it would make sense for UWE to buy Frenchay and keep it open. It then runs as a Medical School and UWE and Bristol keep the best neurological unit in Europe running. 2) UWE wish to improve their sporting facilities, so as both Bristol teams are lacking in a new stadium why not do a deal with either team and get a stadium built that UWE can use. It would be one of the only universities in the country with its own stadium and naming rights would boost the image of the university. As there is a huge UWE logo on their stadium mock-up I can only assume that UWE will get to use it when the Gas aren't using it. I'm sure it's not my fault, but both ideas were mentioned during the consultation meetings according to the reports delivered afterwards. As City fans I guess the one thing that we can take comfort in is that if UWE are involved in the stadium they'll probably balls it up like they've done with most of the university.
