I'm always staggered by the supposed attraction of Spurs. There is a revolving door of management at that club and the seasons seem to alternative between being tipped to break in to the top five or hovering around the lower half of the table. They never seem to be able to step up to the next level and whilst they have played nice football in the past, they do falter to deceive. I would have thought that Southampton are not that far behind Spurs in where they stand in the PL and surpassing Spurs is not an unrealistic target.

I most admit that Spurs are one of the least favoured London clubs as far as I am concerned. Both Arsenal and Chelsea have left them far behind and Spurs lack the plucky charm of the likes of West Ham. I can't see that a move to MP would be beneficial to his career and if he was to move on as I expect, I would have thought that it would have been for a much more prominent club - perhaps a team on the continent.

Plus the association with that arch-windbag "Lord" Sugar should be enough to discourage any sensible person.

I'm with you on this.....There is no reason why we cannot over take Spurs...although he will need the full backing and a bit of finance to do that and then stay there. I agree, though it will depend a lot on our esteemed owner and how ambitious she really is. So far she has talked the part now we need her to act the part.......

I'd like to think very soon, because IF Adam is thinking of joining Liverpool, then MP announcing he is staying early may play a part in him deciding not to go. IF there is something in the story.

Seriously, this bizarre need to double underline and bold the qualifiers that this forum seems to have is really weird and a bit sad.

He might not sign, he might just continue for the last year. That would create a pretty uncertain feeling for the coming season, wouldn't it! <yikes>
His job will be far easier if he signs, so I'm clinging to that.

As the spurs fan who won the saints not606 fantasy football league I'll just nip in here and remind you Southampton are a small club, minute compared to ourselves (Tottenham) and no that isn't said to be a WUM as you have every right to suggest we're behind Chelsea and the goons, but this isn't about how big we are compared to other clubs such as Chelsea or the goons, its about how players and managers view Southampton.

Southampton are a fab little club that has a fantastic youth system and one of my favourite teams to watch but you're nothing more then a stepping stone to bigger things, just like we're a stepping stone to bigger things but the difference with us is that we can keep players for a certain period and finish top four and get into the champions league and then players get a taste and want more.

With yourselves, the best you can hope for is a top 8 finish and the odd cup run so players and managers will see us as a step up and then if they are a success will then move onto clubs which can offer them more.

it's cyclical. it's only a matter of time before tottenham swap places with everton/villa/leeds or anyone similar. it's true though that unless we get disproportionate investment as chelsea and man city have done, we can't rise another level to consistently competing for europe.

if it happened we might become sustainably capable of that after a while. it requires another lunatic to take over.

With all due respect, I don't see spurs qualifying for the champions league again for a while. You're not the same team without Bale carrying you.

For you to take the jump up, you have to keep your best team for a period of 2-3 years, instead what will happen is clubs will pick off your best talent and each year you have to rebuild. It happens to us, its just that for you to attempt that leap (in a short period) it will require big investment but who will you sign? players like osvaldo and raminez? they aren't good enough.

I have huge respect for your youth system but you shouldn't look at us as a club which isn't attractive as we have always been a huge draw for players/managers and when we started to rebuild and move from a mid table team to top five, we could sign the players needed, because of our name, you can't do that but I'm not saying its set in stone, just talking about the current situation and it won't change overnight, which is why you will lose players/managers.

I agree that we need a large investment to get to the top four, but I think we have already shown that if you do things right you can get more bang for your buck. We could easily have been 1 or 2 places higher with a little more experience...I think it was that close.

osvaldo and ramirez aren't good enough but bony probably is and coutinho was cheaper than ramirez. we signed some duffers. it doesn't mean we need to spend more.

now we are where swansea were last season maybe we can do a bit better in the market.

wanyama and lovren have been good though.

What I'm saying is your stuck as a club with potential but can't sign the names that help you move up. The players you have which are fab talents look elsewhere. To move up you have to keep Lallana, Shaw and co, plus sign players like Bony and then make a signing like Davids (like we did). This is why your manager would look at us as a step up, because we're in a position to offer him a chance to leap up a level.

Personally I don't actually want your manager, as we need someone with experience and leadership rather then another young manager but he has done a fantastic job and I hope he stays with saints.

arguably i think the higher we go in player price the more likely we are to sign a wrong-un because only the wrong-uns in that price range want to move to us at the moment. each season we raise our profile maybe we can move up a little in the market.

hang on, i've convinced myself it can be done.
