I see where you're coming from with O'Shea mate but there aren't too many good defenders out there and there are even fewer that would come at a reasonable price, the league is littered with some pretty ordinary defenders who make mistakes just as often as O'Shea. The options we have are buying someone from abroad and hope that they adapt quickly, take a punt on a defender from down in the championship or pay over the odds for someone like Evans like West Brom did and even then it's no massive improvement on O'Shea if it's any improvement at all (in hindsight the player that would have improved our defence but at the time none of us would have wanted is Robert Huth when Stoke wanted rid of him). For what it's worth out of them options I'd rather see us try and take a promising young English defender from the championship to play alongside and then eventually replace O'Shea, I'm sick of seeing foreign players like vergini and coates look great one minute and then miles off the pace the next.

As far as building a team around O'Shea and Catts I agree we aren't going to challenge up the table with them two as the key players in the squad, but in recent years when we have played well they have had a big part to play in that often being the driving force behind it, we still need them in the team we just need better players alongside them before phasing the likes of Catts and O'Shea out,
