He said: “I was born in Oldham but started supporting Newcastle from watching Alan Shearer as a kid. I admired how he played, so that’s where the Newcastle connection came in.

“I was the only one in my family who supported Newcastle, just because of Shearer.

“I got a lot of stick from my mates because, coming from Oldham, they were all United fans. They always beat Newcastle so it wasn’t good.

With regards to his goal against Newcastle..

But Buckley says he had mixed emotions – and even joked he tried to miss. “I feel a bit sorry for them,” he said.

“You could see I did my best to put it wide! I didn’t think I was going to score and then it went in. I didn’t really want to celebrate but I ran off and everyone just jumped on me!”

NEW Sunderland signing Will Buckley grew up as a Newcastle United fan.

Buckley, who completed his £2.5m move from Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday, has signed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

He made headlines in 2012 when he scored the winner for Brighton against Newcastle in an FA Cup tie, and revealed afterwards that he was a fan of the Tyneside club.

The winger said: “I was born in Oldham but started supporting Newcastle from watching Alan Shearer as a kid.

“I admired how he played, so that’s where the Newcastle connection came in.

“I was the only one in my family who supported Newcastle, just because of Shearer.

“I got a lot of stick from my mates because, coming from Oldham, they were all (Manchester) United fans. They always beat Newcastle so it wasn’t good.”

On the goal against Newcastle, Buckley added: “You could see I did my best to put it wide!

“I didn’t think I was going to score and then it went in.

“I didn’t really want to celebrate but I ran off and everyone just jumped on me!”

He is a mag mate.

He has said his dream was to play at SJP. That when he scored against them he didn't feel like celebrating.

I'll try find some links.

How does somebody from Oldham end up supporting any club outside Greater Manchester? Is he a 90s Plaka or what?

Edit: Cheers SAFC83, post 203, confirms he's a Plaka Mag, not too worried.

I can't see him having any animosity towards us though, it's highly unlikely he would have knew any Sunderland fans where he was brought up so he could have some rivalry.
