Apologies for the 'bad' word I used... A big problem, at the moment, is the defence (( you only had to be at Priestfield for the Ipswich and Burton game to see it ! ))
Judging from the effort in the second half of those games - and again today at Wigan, it indicates that there is enough in other areas of the side, which shouldn't have us in such a perilous league position....... The damage was done by the relationship between Scally and Evans.
The focus by Scally does not seem to be in the best interest of the football side of the 'business.'... and Evans reacted to lack of funding by ensuring that he would give relegation as his parting gift to fans who were vile towards him when he brought his previous clubs to Gillingham..

Gills are rooted at bottom of the division...We are lagging by 10 points ( plus goal negative difference ) - We would need a 'swing' involving 4 straight wins - whilst opponents have 4 straight defeats, even to get to 20th....... I cannot see that happening - we are doomed !

I am 'encouraged' by what I have seen in the second half of our latest three games.. Gills need to build on these performances (( as well as sort out a couple of decent defenders - Jackson and Ehmer must go ! )) We need to start building for L2 NOW... so that we might bounce straight back.

Must admit, I was thinking after Wigan's first goal today, that Ehmer needs to go, it shouldn't be forgotten this will be two successive relegation seasons for him, if memory is serving me right. As for Jackson, I've said all I've got to say on him, and Tucker will go to a better club.

So yup, a whole new defensive line up is required.

Apologies for the lack of prediction this time - cost me 2 points because even at my most optimistic I couldn't see us not losing, but I certainly wouldn't have predicted us getting 2 goals.

This isn't an actual match report because the pre-match 'entertainment' was of a level that it wasn't really possible to watch the match in an analytical manner, so it's really just a comment on a general overall viewpoint. Briefly, first half we were hopeless. Lucky to be only 2-0 down at the break as Wigan also hit the bar and the post. We were totally incapable of holding onto possession for more than a couple of passes. A change to playing a back 3 (or 5) helped steady the ship a bit, so at least we didn't concede more. The second half was quite remarkable - passes actually seemed to find players who were finding a bit (only a bit, but when you're up against it the small differences matter) of space. Our 2 goals were well taken - sharp shots taken opportunistically. A Wigan response was inevitable, and while they never threatened to the extent they had in the first half they were so obviously the more accomplished side. Their 3rd goal was just a gift. Deserved on balance, and if they hadn't scored that one they'd probably have have scored somehow else, and after that they controlled the game sufficiently to hold onto the 3 points.

So, a result that probably many would have taken before the game, and despite getting the game to 2-2 were were still more lucky than unlucky overall. Can't pick out any star players, but the general effort was mostly good. But it'll take the miracle of all miracles for us to be playing in L1 next season.
