I am genuinely sick of the abuse thrown at Rutter ... I say again, the kid is quality and will be a very good player, if not at Leeds then elsewhere ... people claiming he was dire against WBA really just like a moan I suppose, and probably don't look at a football match in terms of strategy and movement
It's easy to get lost following the ball, because then all you see is a miss or a bad pass ... it's not all about that ... when Bamford missed that sitter against Leicester I was gutted, but what I saw was a very good forward getting himself in behind defenders to create a chance for himself ... too often this is overlooked
So here goes with what I see from Rutter ... I did comment on this passage of play in the Rutter thread so check there for reference
PART 1
Leeds have broken up play in the centre circle and the ball has reached Dan James who has come off his wing
PART 2
James has drifted inside nicely into space and has time to select a pass ... Rutter has the defenders on toast, having lost his marker (Pieters) and is now able to run in behind the CBs ... Rutter has effectively given James two options to play him in, between the CBs or to his feet behind the closest CB ... either pass puts Rutter in on goal, and he's worked the space beautifully ... WBA have no clue how to cope with this level of movement, but unfortunately it seems neither do Leeds
PART 3
James carries the ball too far and draws contact, so he checks back inside and pops the ball to Shackleton with Gelhardt bombing past him in support ... Rutter still has the advantage over the CBs as he's behind them
PART 4
Shackleton has now found Ayling out wide, and our RB has turned inside and given himself the opportunity to put a ball into the far post ... Rutter has brilliantly drifted outside their RB and is now looking at the number on every defender's back ... this is the ideal starting position for a striker, and a ball into the back post allows Rutter to run onto it and probably score, just like Ayling did
Unfortunately, Ayling doesn't pull the trigger and the chance is gone ... Rutter's excellent movement and positioning goes unrewarded
PART 5
Ayling has turned back onto his right foot and played the ball to Joffy who has found space wide for himself, and the lad has shifted the ball onto his left foot, perfectly set for a cross into the far post
Rutter is still on the move, but now he has got himself between the RB and the CB (Kipre) ... a whipped ball from Joffy to the space in front of Rutter kills WBA ... instead Joffy dummies and cuts inside, looking for an opening to get a shot at goal ... he's blocked off, the ball goes back to Shack who is tackled to get a Leeds corner
Rutter's intelligence, movement and positioning is quality, and it's clear the kid knows what he's doing up front ... a prime Pablo in this team would have been looking for these runs, and imagine the havoc that would have caused
Sorry, if you think Rutter's rubbish I have news for you, he just needs the team to understand his movement and start looking for him more ... he must be a nightmare for defenders to keep an eye on, constantly shifting position and looking for runs across or in behind ... just this passage of play shows his movement is top level quality ... in the space of 10 seconds he has created three opportunities to be found in dangerous positions
Give the lad a chance, support him and see where he takes us ... I rate him, highly
