I dont support any team in Zambia. Club football is non-existent (well at least is was back then). People back home follow the national team over any club to be honest, unlike in England (i use that loosely cos i'm sure people are different). I know many people who support their club team over the national side here, and i mean all clubs; United, Liverpool, Arse, Spurs...etc. That would never happen in Zambia. Anyway I follow Zambia first, Man United second and Glentoran 3rd over here cos the stadium is right round the corner and a few of my friends are supporters so i kinda got roped in (i don't get involved in the political stuff tho).

Speaking of glory hunters...I have a cousin who supported, Newcastle in the Keegan Days, United after that, then Arsenal during the invincible spell, then Chelsea, and now he's a Citeh fan! I need to check in on him, cos he's probably following PSG or Anzhi now haha. I suppose we all hate so called fake fans, who only follow the club purely because they win. I hate them kind of fans. I'm not from Manchester but still it annoys me, probably even to the same level as a local supporter.

But at the end of the day, we all make our own choices and we live for ourselves. So, none should judge anyone else's commitment unless it blatantly obvious of course, like my cousin the knob end. haha

Bump*** Just a reminder, Zambia play Libya today. I hope you all will be rooting for the Chipolopolo (copper bullets). Surely you wont go Libya...
they (when i say 'they' i refer to the actual people involved, not tainting the whole nation with the same brush) are responsible for the Lockerbie bombing and subsequent pressure on the British govt to release the bomber on medical grounds. Last i checked the bastard Megrahi is still alive, 2 years after being close to death with cancer or something.

On a less political note.....GO ZAMBIA!!!

I personally don’t buy the idea that you must support a local team; I have been a Manchester United supporter since I first became interested in football in the mid 90s. This is for a number of reasons, firstly they were obviously a well known side that was playing well, makes it very easy for a young child to like them as a team. Secondly my two best friends were both united supporters, which is always a swaying factor. Thirdly, and most importantly, when I was young my sporting hero was David Beckham. From this I obviously developed a strong affinity and following of Manchester United.

By the time I started to hear the usual Glory Hunting rubbish and started to consider the argument that you should support a local team or one that you have some connection too I was a strong united supporter with a real affection for the players and the club. This connection to the club is what I consider the most important aspect in deciding who you should support, it is always easier if you live near a big club, or if there is some family connection to a club i.e. through a parent for example. But I don’t buy it, why should you be able to support a club because your dad came from there, I don’t care much for that argument, id be more swayed in the fact that your dad supported the team so you followed suit as a personal choice. Ultimately I think you should support a team where you actually feel a connection for a reason beyond successes or the belief that you should support said team.

Ultimately if I were told to support my local team I would have struggled as a youngster to even name a local team, by the time I found out about the teams that were local to me I had been a United supporter for a good few years, simply because when you are a youngster who is fairly new to football (my dad was never interested, despite his father being a referee, and his uncle was a player, referee and is currently a member of FIFA, odd I know) you don’t know much about that non league side that is 10 miles down the road, or that 3rd tier side that is another 20 miles away, etc.

I think I am justified in sticking to my convictions, sure I am not from Manchester, I’m not even from the north, however I am not a glory hunter and I have never wavered in my support of Manchester United, and I will never support another team as I would not feel a connection to them. Ultimately how is this different to players playing for whomever they wish, why shouldn’t they have to play for their local team by the same logic that you must adhere to these same fan principles.

    Great article by the way!

P.S. feel free to call me a glory hunter if you must people, I have heard it all before and I couldn’t care less by this point

At no point do you mention where you're actually from. Any reason behind this? Out of interest.

I agree with this. Whilst it's important to support your local team if you actually have one, to listen to some fans newborn babies have a duty to get on Google maps as soon as possible and triangulate the nearest league club to within about ten yards...

This is the only reason I ask. If you're nowhere near a league club then it is perfectly natural to support whoever you want.

Conversly, if you do have a local club I find it wierd to ignore them and not form an attraction. I now live in Swansea and adore the club, I've watched them in all four divisions and this is as a United fan (they are my actual local team) who's team is going through a rich vein of success. I just got involved, I love football that much that I just find it natural to go and watch the local side when I can.

Those that don't, even just by showing an interest, are the ones I just don't get.

If you have a local team, support them. Why would you wnat to support a team from a place you have no connection with. I understand if you are from a country where football isnt professional or you have no club in the place you live, but if your from bolton, dont support liverpool, if your from stockport dont support city and if your from london dont support ****ing united

Aye, but by the perverse logic of some, if Swansea was your local team and then you moved to Manc and started following Utd as well that would make you a massive glory hunter...

I do get what you're saying tho - I follow Altrincham a fair bit, but can't say I really support them as I've supported Utd since before we moved here.

If you grow up in a place, go to school there, you must hit the age where you support a team, surely that is your local one?

Could be, but if you went to University there for instance and stayed and regularly went to matches (you'd need a well paid job of course!!) and an affinity developed then why not?
The only ones who really bug me are those, as Comas kind of describes, who have the option to support someone local to them but just decide, because we're rather good, to support United one day and then become 'fans'. Those people know who they are.

    Excellent.

Incredible story considering the relatively recent tragedy in 1993.
