Hmmmm maybe my reseach methodology should not involve Brazilians and Italians from the AC side of Milan.
Im sorry to say, the Ketchup has it wrong this time. P.s- no offence meant, i know about the Keyboard Dyslexia.
So which sauces did you research - Heinz, Crosse & Blackwell, Lea & Perrins.............. Talking about stripes - a long time ago, I know, and memory can play tricks, but I'll swear that Watford played in gold and black stripes for a short while in the early 60's, but I can't find any reference to it. I have a distinct recollection of seeing Johnny Fairbrother score wearing that strip. Anyone else remember?
I don't think we ever played in black & gold stripes. However in 64 or 65 we played a season with a thick black stripe down one side of the front of the shirts - the programme also had the same stripe. I'm not sure sure how long that lasted. I think that Fairbrother had broken his leg and left by that time though.
66-67/ 67-68 were the programmes with the black stripe but not it seems on the shirts. Fairbrother last played in 62-63. Scored 5 in League and 1 in FLC.
It was about this time that I started going to Watford on a reqular basis, Johnny Fairbrother was replaced by my Hero Charlie Livesey. At this time the shirt was dark yellow (not old gold) with a crew neck collar which was black and black cuffs on the sleeves. Black Shorts and Yellow & Black Socks. If the opposing team shirts clashed we played in an all red shirt with black collar and cuffs.
I think your memory is playing tricks Vic it was 74 to 76 we played with the thick black stripe down the left hand side of the shirt and there were two stripes, the collar was Polo type which was black and the shirt cuffs were black also)
For your info we have been wearing Yellow based shirts on and off since 1891. 1891-93 Looking at the shirt from the front - Right sleeve old gold with yellow cuff, Right half of shirt yellow, right half of (polo type) collar old gold, left half of collar yellow, left half of shirt old gold & leftt sleeve yellow with gold cuff. 1893-1904 Red and Yellow Stripes with Red (Polo Type) collar and cuffs 1904-1909 Green, Red & Yellow hoops, Green (Crew neck) collar and red cuffs. So we have been Golden Boys for a long time Come on you 'orns
Blimey this thread is beginning to sound like an afternoon in a care home...can you old duffers please make your minds up!
Better a care home than a kindergarten, w-y you young whippersnapper! All these gaudy hooped shirts were a long time ago, before we wore yellow (and old gold), blue was the predominant colour in the Football League. Although we have now been wearing yellow based kits for far longer than we wore the blue......
Not forgetting our shirts at one time were all white, black & white stripes, all red, green and red quarters as well as Blue & White stripes.
I know this is slightly off-topic, but I'd like to see one day we have a kit that is similar to Brentford's current away kit.
Vic we wore Yellow and old Gold a long time before we wore blue. I admit we wore blue for several years including other colours in the middle years but we went back to Yellow and Gold from Blue.
