In Arsenal's case I think their problem in the transfer market is the same of that we have seen on the pitch (particularly in the CL first knockout round and in the PL in Feb/March) which of course is the issue of bottle.

Seeing Arsenal desperately trying to haggle for the services of Jonny Evans is reminiscent of the same small mentality we have seen from them as they allow Barca and Bayern have their way with them, often leading to some truly brutal maulings. We also see this submissive trait in the Gunners when they lose 5/6 games on the trot in Februrary, often to relegation candidates, as any chance of a first PL title in 16 years is extinguished.

I don't know what the Latin on the Gunners crest stands for, but if it was " Think small, lose big", it would be very fitting.

Because some managers like to take advantage of other managers blinking late in the window...while other managers like to spend there money blustery with reckless abandon early to show everyone .... they can .Not rocket surgery .. seer of stupidity .

It's not a choice between being a flop or having a resale value, is it?! How about the value being in the success they bring the club? You've just quoted the players bought by Chelsea by saying "despite being massively successful between 2005 and 2012..." and totally missed that THAT is the point of buying players. You've been well and truly brainwashed by your manager fella <ok>

that's not quite what he is saying though, is it? He's saying without Roman bankrolling them and writing off the debt they would've gone 'Portsmouth' even though they were massively successful, same with Man city, everyone else has to live within their means so cannot take the risk as they don't have someone willing to take the clubs loss personally.

Which has nothing to do with resale value.

To answer your point is simple. Do Arsenal have enough in the bank to spend on buying a proven CF and CB. The answer is yes and therefore a whole moot point. So who gives a toss about resale value? A club like arsenal's main revenue stream is not (and should not be) from resale value. It should be from success on the pitch and the merchandising that goes with it. Hence why you buy top players to compete for it.

" Who gives a toss about resale value ". Well certainly not Man City , Chelsea and especially ManU .....pretty well everyone else though has to worry about " Resale value " as they don't have the " Silver Spoon " financial route to the store bought titles .

I never understand why people quote something out of context from the rest of a post when the rest of the post explains the very thing they then start arguing about.

Have a look at what I've put in that post about Arsenal and it covers any argument you've just made.

    Nothing out of context ,
" So who gives a Toss about resale value " Not Arsenal is what Treb is saying , just like ManU , Man City , and Chelsea " . Everyone else that doesn't have that " Money stream " must know what they are buying with a long term goal to at least get money back in the big picture or have a good long term player .
Teams like the Manchester teams , Arsenal and Chelsea can spend wildly and if it doesn't work out can fling them away like a bic lighter cause there is a lot more money where that came from ...( Di Maria , with an outside chance of a big loss with Pogba ) .

Ofcourse it's out of context if the rest of my post is solely about Arsenal. Here's the bit you've chosen to miss out...

To answer your point is simple. Do Arsenal have enough in the bank to spend on buying a proven CF and CB. The answer is yes and therefore a whole moot point. So who gives a toss about resale value?

Big Ern picked up on a post where I was responding to Enigma who questioned why Arsenal should worry about resale value when most other posters are rightly saying he shouldn't. It's just neither have you have gone back far enough to follow the conversation.

You're right about other clubs. I've never said otherwise. Each case is different. But then, so is the ambition of each club. It's a simple point mate, if Arsenal can afford to buy player X for e.g. £60m because they have the funds in abundance NOW... and said player X will improve their chances of silverware, then resale value is immaterial. Their ambition is to win silverware. Stan is right in his initial post, if you're an Arsenal fan paying the extortionate amounts they do to go see their team week in week out, they should be vexed that the club is not interested in spending the money to bring success, but rather to turn a profit on players. That's not the expectation of the fans, nor should it be the ambition of a club that can afford to do otherwise.

Wenger is leaving a £5M bid for Messi until the last moment so that he can show that they tried to sign someone.

Business so far some nobody from Bolton and Jacka the thug who runs around kicking everyone.
