Real welcoming bunch you lot aren't you. Not the first time I've seen this on here and won't be the last. There's low balling and then there's taking the piss. Starting with a 4.5 million bid for Forster is a massive waste of time.
Should I instead say he's right even if I disagree with him? The Forster move wouldn't have been done by now even if we'd met the price straight off.
Exactly....and to be fair offering that amount would have just pissed Celtic off, who'll now probably hold out for more.
lets face it we peaked last year. that's as good as it gets in English football for a team like saints.
Is supporting a team all about winning and tables? I loved the LeTiss era and we barely ever seemed to win. I just like to see a team with fight playing in an entertaining way. Eight, ninth, tenth... Who cares?
Who cares if the £4.5m bid was "taking the piss"? It's negotiating strategy, and I really don't think whether or not the Celtic board feel insulted should be factored into our thinking. Starting low with an offer you basically know won't be accepted is a pretty common way to start bartering.
I actually have some sympathy for this point of view. Of course you go in low, but I think the OP is commenting that the thing not to do is go in embarrassing as it actually only serves to waste time and get people's backs up. A little like the 10m bid for Morgan that people object to. I don't think it's an entirely unreasonable post. There's an element of urgency that needs to be somewhat adhered to right now in terms of getting players in.
I see it both ways but only because we seem to take forever to complete deals, are we taking the piss with our first offers, more than likely and it seems a tactic that rarely works. However i believe its been this way since Cortese arrived so maybe its an approach that needs changing.
Of course it is Joe, but to what end does a 'piss takey' first bid serve us right now in our situation. Of course go in low, and let's get discussions started off, but let's leave the derisory stuff for another day when we also have time to play with.
Yeah, though it depends on exactly how low one starts, and how willing you are to make significant movements thereafter. If you offer less than half a club's valuation and then inch up ever-so-slightly to what you know to be a wholly unacceptable offer (the Mike Ashley method), you are rather much taking the piss. If you're rebuffed and come back with something competitive, that's negotiating. That said -- and this applies to much more than just football transfers -- I've always found the idea of beginning negotiations with an absurdly uncompetitive bid rather unproductive, because your first move off that position almost necessarily has to be a large one to keep negotiations worthwhile, and I'd rather start higher consequently and appear firmer when the bids start moving.
Not panicking at all St George - just questioning whether in our current situation, the negotiating tactics seemingly being employed are entirely the right ones.
We must be doing something wrong, our players who get an offer go immediately onto social media, feed bile to friendly Red Top journo's and go on strike/sulk to much to play. Our tactics need looking at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
