Timmy Mallet turned it down as well l , the club thought it would be a good thing as he was big in the 80's......
I might be missing something, but why is Deschamps being seriously considered? He's had a woeful season with Marseille, who are probably the closest thing to our equivalent club in the French league.
I'd say it is more likely that they haven't got a clue and so each media outlet is making up their own links to two or three managers, hence the large amount of links currently in the market for discussion...
Brendan Rodgers did not want to be part of an interview process and felt he deserved to be offered the job straight away based on what he's shown at Swansea thus far. For me that makes me glad that we never got him. Frank De Boer is at Ajax with a batch of young players he feels he can take a little further, that is a fair enough reason, and he's got plenty of his managerial career to get a job at a big club. And Klopp was a long shot anyway, I don't think the club were setting their sights on him, it was more of a hopeful enquiry just incase he was interested.
You could also look at it from the other angle and wonder why these guys (or agents) felt the need to tell the media they had been approached...
