Why are British players so highly priced?

Why would you want this man anywhere near an England team?

I know he's put in the catergory of a 'lazy' player, but seriously, eight caps, EIGHT! What's more, it was at a time England were absolutely awful.

IMO it is down to the "home grown" rule which bumps there price.

Exile the point about Le Tissier is that he is a lazy bastard!

And would you be happy for someone as ****ing ugly as him representing your country! <ok>

that's because he only peaked for about two years! gazza was and still is the best english footballer i've ever seen in the flesh, and i've seen a fair few! indeed, he is one of the top players full stop. the only guy who i've watched who i think eclipsed gascoigne in that 90-91 season was fat ronaldo. even better than zidane i'd say, if only for one season - zidane did it for six or seven years, though he only peaked mid 20s - how good would gazza have been had he not been crippled at 23? for the record, i've never seen messi or maradona live - they are the two best i've seen in my lifetime though <ok>

Was Darren Eadie ever good enough to represent England in his prime?

    Serious question BTW!

Early to mid 90s I assume! Was he ever in contention back then?

Graham Taykor was England manager at the time so I reckon he wouldn't have even been considered!

Only twice have I watched a City player and been certain they'd play for England. You knew Sutton would have a good career, same with Green etc, but the only two where you just 'knew' for me were Ashton and Eadie.

We had similar hopes for Kieron Dyer but it never worked out for him in the end. I never rated Bent as being a decent England player and it looks like I was proved right!

agree with that. i think eadie was called up two or three times but kept getting injured on england duty! a familiar story...

ashton would have gone on to get 50+ caps for england, such was his undoubted ability. eadie would probably have got 20+ were it not for injury, mainly cos he would have solved england's left side problem of the mid to late 90s!

Dyer had huge potential, talent that deserved a better career.

I can't remember how close Eadie actually ever came to England. It was certainly talked about, but how much substance there was I can't remember.
He was probably the biggest individual victim of our relegation. Had we stayed up, with less 'robust' challenges going in, he might have been OK. Who knows. But at his best, he just oused class.

Sad to think that the three most naturally gifted players I've seen through Carrow Road have all had their careers either ended, or substantially altered, by injury. Eadie & Ashton could have had super careers, and as good as Bellamy's has been, he's never been quite the player he was pre-Muscatt.

Ashton was an outstanding player. Such a shame he was cursed by injury. I have no doubt England would have been a better team with him in it.

I think Ashton would have gone down as one of Englands best forwards over the last 30 years.

So much skill for someone so big and a scorer of fantastic goals. I think he showed what a big player can do, not the slapstick comedy of Andy Carrol.

A really good player and almost kept us up by himself in the short time he was here. It was him, not Huckerby who turned that team around.

Don't forget Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate played in Europe as did Jimmy Greaves in the 60's

Mcmanamen also won the champions league at real Madrid, and scored in the final, if memory serves correctly.

Eadie was called up be hoddle in 1997 for le tournoi but got injured.
