Without any shadow of a doubt, its Tony Fernandes. After we fluked our way back to the promised land via Mr Zamora's left foot, we should've got shot of Redcrap immediately and appointed a manager that would keep us up and slowly build on that. It was our chance to be like Brentford are now, we royally blew it. Everything that's happened since pales into insignificance, it should all be irrelevant. We won't get back into that position until most of us on here , are watching Stanley do his thing in the great gig in the sky !
There is never one single cause for an event. It's always a combination of factors but when it comes to blame you've absolutely nailed it there. Fernandes takes prime billing. The owners collectively may know how to run a normal business but do not have a clue when it comes to a football club but they bought into his vision.
I am not entering into the debate about who is responsible for buying players and their criteria. None of us know and we are all guessing based on someone else's guess and rumour. What I will say however is that I find it remarkable that a player can be bought on the basis of OPTA stats and an algorithm based on potential for increase in market value without any input at all from the coach. If that is what the Board have sanctioned so that Nourry is the only person making the decisions that is incredibly stupid. I would however add that any manager or coach who accepted that restriction on his role is also a fool.
While we talk about Brentford, does anyone seriously believe that their success in the transfer market came without any input at all from each of their managers starting with Rosler, Warburton, Dean Smith, Thomas Frank? I suspect that it's the manager who chooses who he would want in an ideal world and that the CEO or board then decide the terms of the deal and the price they are willing to pay.
That brings the argument round full circle. Why are we still fishing in the cheap pools? Because of the FFP fine ie Tony Fernandes coupled now with the fact that other clubs have fallen foul and had massive points deductions. The Board is understandably cautious to ensure the club can live within its means.
