If we're disregarding form then Vidic is better than Kompany.

Which contradicts what you said about Vidic.

Vidic is the best defender in English football, bar none. Even unfit, he is miles better than kompany who was lucky to stay on the pitch after his two footed tackle in the match against Norwich. <ok>

Probably Kompany, Agger, Jageilka right now.

Vidic if he comes back could be up there. Evans has played well.

Bit different when you've been out for 2 seasons and played basically no football. You're missing my point, I'm not including Vidic at all because we don't know if he's still at the same level he was.

Think you'll find the majority of the country will agree Kompany is currently the best CB in the league.

If it's not done on actual form then Vidic is better. Kompany has had one good season, last season. The one before that and also this he's been merely ok to good at best.

Vidic has not been out for two seasons either, it was about a season and a quarter, tops. He was injured during the group games of last seasons champions league.

That's largely down to past form and who he plays for. Currently he is no better than Agger and Jagielka, and not much better than Evans, Shawcross, Huth, Terry and a whole bunch of other defenders. There is no stand out defender in the PL on current form, so Kompany sticks in people's minds as the last defender to be really outstanding.

he's been the most improved player at United over the last 18 months, he's was key to us keeping in touch with City last season.

Sorry, but even before Vidic's injury crisis, I didn't see the best defender in the world.

He gets away with so many red card challenges and yellow card challenges.

I remember a few seasons ago, he only got 2 red cards, but he should have got at least 4. He's a great defender but the not the best in the world until he returns from his injury and proves it.

I highly doubt that. Honestly think Vidic will return at United and then take up an ambassador/coaching role. More chance of Giggs actually retiring. <whistle>

That's arguably the defining factor for a good defender - the ability to make challenges that should be fouls but don't get given. Just look at Terry - he's made a career out of marking faster and more skilful players by fouling them in such a subtle manner that refs often miss it. Carragher, Collocini, Hypia, Adams, Pallister, Kompany and loads of other defenders played the game in the very similar way. Vidic has simply proven better at it than most of them.

Whether those defenders are better than the more skilful players like Rio, Carvalho and King who tackle cleanly but are often less brutally effective in the tackle and thus sometimes get caught out is a different question.
