This I think this is a get in early message to other clubs that we are not planning on being taken to the cleaners, even though everyone knows we are well desperate. I get the impression we are going to get a few more of those stories this window, of players we are interested in, but don't get, and go on to be one of the best in the world. Houllier had a few, Rafa had some, same with Kenny... **** off Woy, you useless small minded ****....
I think that Rodgers is basically saying that we won't be throwing huge transfer fees like the £35mil on Carroll. He'll get the right players for the right price (though probably no one over £20mil)
Can't see what benefit Werner would get from making his comments up, the fans aren't stupid and will clearly see whether he was telling the truth or not in two months time. However, Rodgers saying his bit is him trying to tell other clubs we have no money and won't be doing much business. It is an attempt to get player prices down. Unfortunately for Brendan, he is going to get a rude awakening because no ones sells cheap to Liverpool Football Club!
Agreed My fear though is that they have the same preparations for sale as H&g did - they run down the club, strangle the money supply and then still expect the sale price of @2006/7 when we were CL winners and regulars.
I don't know what exactly FSG's plans are for the transfer window, but I can imagine that summer 2011 is something that will play on their minds. They made a lot of money available for acquisitions, and got very little out of it. Arguably only Bellamy (free) and Enrique (£6m) were hits, and they were the cheapest by some margin. With that in mind they might think spending smaller is the way to go, or that the manager will choose more wisely if he believes he only has the funds for 2 players, rather than 5 or 6. If Rodgers is as meticulous as I hope he is, he should have 3 or 4 contingency plans in place so that we don't get a repeat of the summer. He should know what bare figure he has to spend, and also consider both the maximum and minimum funds he can get in through sales (for instance, Downing would sell for max £12m, min £6m.) Then he'd need to work out various plans around each situation. It's always better to get a player in and fail to sell a player to cover it than the opposite, as we've found. Despite the ridiculous sum we parted with, the way the Carroll/Torres deal was done was quite good business. We should've had a similar thing in place before he went to WHU, i.e. 'you get Carroll just so long as we can get x or y in, and if we can't, then we keep him.'
I would like to be polite but what you've said is a complete load of bollocks! Firstly there was NO sale price in 2006/7. Any figures beening thrown about were merely speculation. Secondly, you can argue about how the money has been spent but investment has been made Thirdly, there is no sign either on or off the pitch that the club is being "run down" So if you want to forward an argument, please do us a favour and forward arguments that at least stand up scrutiny! Will FSG seek to sell the club? I don't know and neither do you. At this point in time there are no indicators either way.
I don't know what to think to be honest. I'd like to think we might have some but I'm not convinced they will cough up. Not spending damages the club and reduces the money it makes, and thus hurting the owners. It makes sense for them to spend but I have a nasty feeling we might not. If we don't it would be a major blow. As someone above has said, the money from Andy if he goes would give us some to play with. Who knows.
I think (could be wrong) we have only signed two players in the January transfer window under FSG and those two account for a hit and miss record: Carroll is obviously the 'miss' but Suarez is a pretty big 'hit'.
No need to be polite: nobody else is around here! I'm going off the 2008 figure that, allegedly, was £450-500m that H&G (specifically Hicks) knocked back from DIC's final offer. FSG bought a @£400m club for £300m because of a distressed sale. That gives them at least £100m to write off the £50m stadium debt - instead they've 'loaned' it to us. Even before they got here we had signed the Standard Chartered deal. Good for them that they immediately set about reducing the wage bill (had to be done), but both these actions (and increasing merchandising across the globe) gave them the opportunity to invest in the squad. As far as I can see, they didn't - not as much as H&G first did out of their own pockets anyway. Now don't get me wrong, we were days away from going into administration and the financial reality is that we can't keep spending money like we did, and I was one of many on the old 606 who said so. BUT, one of the prime reasons for RBS selecting FSG was not price, it was their plans to do what H&G couldn't do - build a stadium that would allow us to eventually compete with all but the 'sugar-daddy' clubs. They've reneged on that: so they should have more money to spend on the squad. But my main reason? They left Kenny holding his dick in his hand over the Suarez business. They have NO understanding or empathy of the history and ethos of this club, nor its worldwide fanbase, of all races, who would have stood with them had they taken our traditional and unending foe, the FA, on. But they whimpered at the onslaught of the British gutter press (most of whom had 20-odd year scores to settle with LFC). Say what you want about Tom Hicks (and i did) but when UEFA were trying to exaggerate and slur our fans over Athens he went in to bat for us. FSG ran away. They're just a holding company of asset-strippers, and I have no faith in them whatsoever. But i am happy that they've picked someone like Brendan (I suggested martinez before Kenny was appointed 'caretaker' manager) to get us back to the basics of a pass-and-move club of our sixties heritage. Apart from that, they and their moneyball can **** off.
"All we wanted to see was progress and we've had that." - Tom Werner, Carling Cup final, 2012. Stone cold liar.
Rodgers said to talksport today that there is money to spend and he will be bringing some players in.
This is a no win position. Make any form of statement regarding January purchases and it will be analysed to death. Supporters, journos and everybody in between will bend any reference to fit their own agenda. However neither Rodgers or Werner can be specific about who's in or who's out or the amount that they intend to spend. So speculate and 'interpret' all you want, I'll wait and see.
How much interest in these comments do agents or other clubs take...? I suspect very little. The only way comments would make a difference is if we came out and said we had **** loads to spend which clearly isn't going to happen
