Arsenal will be our biggest threat because if results dont improve mr. wenger will be out on his arsene (see what i did, i must be the coolest ****er on this whole site) and a new manager who isnt afraid to spend will be in and have them firing again. as for spurs meh

I think Arsenal may be forced to dip quite deep into their pockets in January. They got a few faces in at the end of the last window, but it all seemed a bit hurried and as if they really had to accept second best (there's been several reports of bids they made that they didn't have time to pull off, like Gotze, M'Vila etc.) If they're in the top 6 come January, which I think they may be, they could come on stronger after the winter window.

I think/hope, realistically, that it may finish something like:

    Man United
    Man City
    Chelsea
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    Spurs

United I think will win it because they know how to. We've seen teams put up a good challenge only for it to fall apart a bit in April (Arsenal, for example) and I think Man City may well do this. United rarely have a bad spell.

So anyway, to answer the OP, I think Arsenal will be closer to us than Spurs.

Just what I was thinking actually. Pulis seems to have made a habit of taking players who didn't make the grade at other clubs, like Shawcross, Huth, Pennant, Etherington and Fuller, and fitting them into a very strong team. If he can do the same with players like Upson, Woodgate, Crouch and Palacios, who all have decent top flight, and even CL, experience then they could have a great season and be dark horses for Europe. Doubt they'll get top 4, but they may make a good crack at it, and 5th or 6th wouldn't be out of reach.

How can you have such a good knowledge of football, have such common sense, and still be a manc?? Stop living a lie and come and support the real team in red ;-)

Think they could be like Fulham were under (dare I say it) Roy, that season they finished 7th. Very difficult to beat at home, and if they can get around 40-45 points from that alone, they only need to win 4 or 5 and draw a couple more away to get there, I feel, which isn't beyond reason.

to be fair i think that is a good reflection on how the prem might finish, and dont forget stevie g is to come back.i will be happier if we beat the spuds at there place next week and that might give us a clue in what we need to expect from us this season,
yep arsenal more of a challange than spuds.

ZeLiverbird pointing out that Arsenal in their current state remind him of LFC two years back is a fantastic observation and one I myself made to a friend while watching the Arsenal vs LFC game (hence it's a fantastic observation).

The only thing Arsenal have in their favour as opposed to our situation back then is a stable ownership. I think if Wenger pulls off a couple of quality signings in January they'll be in a better position to compete in the home stretch.

I wonder what the effect of no CL football would be on Arsenal. Would we see a mass exodus?

I now realise I haven't even effectively answered the question but at this moment in time I put Spurs and Arsenal on a par.
