Wages are the most important figure. The wage bill table is very similar to the actual league table in most seasons.

"If you sell your entire team for £500m and then buy an entire new one for £50m its not the same as another team who kept their £500m-worth squad and spent an additional £50m on it." Of course. The talent level of their squad is now 550m, and yours is 50m.

But now that model has fallen to pieces (losing key players, their CL future going down to the final game of the PL every other season etc) , they are having to spend > 40m for the likes of Ozil.
