End of a era. SAF has done his job in reversing the positions: United at the top and scousers in the doldrums..

But in terms of replacement Moyes was the ONLY choice.

Mourinho: too selfish and self centred

    Ancelloti, capello: too old

Klopp: did well but unproven in English football

Guardiola: unproven in English football but now not available anyway.

AVB: tainted record at the Chavs

Rafa: associated with the scousers and the Chavs, faltered when he could have won the title

Mancini: success driven by huge funding, post title season mediocre, no record of promoting academy, youth

Of the Englsh/British managers, who are there?

Redknapp: too much baggage, not top class

Allardyce: scrapper but not top class football

    MON: record tainted at Sunderland

    Of the past players:

Ince: good in smallish clubs but tainted hs record at Blackburn

Hughes: good with Wales but his record at QPR and buys there poor and led to relegation

Bruce: mid table position, patchy record

Solskaer: led a club to a title but unproven in the big leagues

United need someone who can put club ahead of self interest. Given the money, Moyes will win that first trophy quickly and since he has not won anything through years of hard work, it is unlikely he will be satisfied with just one or two.he will recognise talent and able to bring it but like SAF won't be phased by it...

Moyes was the only choice for United. Long live the new King...<ok>

    You missed Roy Keane!

Well, because he's a miserable twat with an axe to grind.

Agree 100% with what you say on all of this, Moyes is a good choice and onwards we go.
    Looking forward to it.

and those who have burnt their bridges with the club: like keane and the rest.

Keane is ruthless (which is good) but is too self centred.

I dunno about the only choice - I'd have preferred Klopp, but not by a huge amount. Klopp unproven in England, but Moyes unproven at a top club and in Europe so Klopp shades it for me. But apparently he wasn't willing to come here for whatever reason, so Moyes was the best candidate available for us.

Agree with you about Mourinho - interesting how people overlook the decline of Chelsea and Inter after he left - Inter was obviously more down to Rafa, but I can't help feel that when he came to both those clubs they had a chance to achieve real long term dominance in their leagues, like SAF did at Utd, but Mourinho squandered some of that long term potential in favour of short term success. Will be interesting to see what happens to Real after he leaves the club divided and publicly embarrassed.

Was Klopp really approached and if so was it as part of a shortlist or to take over?

I know sources "in the know" say he was the first person approached and initial negotiations started but then stalled.

Whether that's actually true or not I dunno, but I know Klopp publicly stated a few months ago that he didn't want to manage in the PL, so it made sense to approach him first just to see if he could be persuaded to change his mind. Then it might have come down to a choice between Klopp or Moyes.

I would have personally had Guardiola but he wasn't an option and also rate Klopp and think he would have done well.
I do think though that Moyes is an excellent choice, there are pros and cons to most options but the pros outweigh the cons for me.

He's never managed a 'big' club? Well, he is now.
Never won a trophy? Now's his chance.
Never managed in the CL? Ditto.

It's called career progression, in all walks of life people have to go through this and this is his opportunity.

It worked for Fergie, I see no season why it can't with Moyes.

Any United fan worthy of the name will give him every support.

    RHC's mate? <laugh>

Love how he tried to 'break' the Moyes story too. About a day after I'd found out.

Him and another bloke I know. Like I say, not the most reliable of sources, but they have told me stuff in advance before. The mate from home told me Ronaldo was leaving a month before the 09 CL final and that RVP was coming to Utd two weeks before the deal was agreed. So he's at least as reliable as every newspaper and media company in the western world ;)
