I think everyone was far too interested in getting a big named manager rather than someone who Cortese knew who could deliver the goods.
This is one of the great things about Nigel, there is always a plan B (or even C) to resort to. Would Pardew have turned round the Brighton game, or the MK Dons game? We hardly ever pulled games back when we were losing under Pardew, and quite often lost games we were winning by easing up. Nigel has the team playing for 95 minutes, every time, and never gives up trying to win.
No, I certainly wouldn't have and had never heard of the guy, so a pat on the back to Cortese. In comparing Pardew to Nigel, I think I like Nigel better in every way except his work on the transfer market. So far (and I know it's early) I think Pardew was superior at bringing in the better players. Otherwise I'm as happy as a clam with everything NA has done.
I would have been one of the many who felt we needed a big name to reinforce the sense that we are a big club. But I also give people a chance, so when NA was appointed I was eager to for him to prove Nicola right and he did.
I would have signed him as soon as possible, got a bit worried when he seemed to hold off, but it turned out he was doing the decent thing in making sure affairs were in order at Sc unthorpe before he left, an honourable man as well as a master tactician, be grateful we have got a good'un.
Honestly? No...But the Don got the right man for the right job...he has so far surpassed my expectations and would not now want anyone else...
His name didn't cross mymind until the rumours started. I was thinking about the usual suspects but realised Kevin Spacey, although a really big name and an award winner, didn't have the right experience. No I wouldn't have. Once he was rumoured I quite liked the idea.
In a word, No. I didn't really know who I wanted. I suppose Eddie Howe was favourite for me. I knew I didn't want another big name. They either get a bigger, better (Hoddle) offer or get frustrated (Souness). I was hoping for a hungry young manager with some sort of developing pedigree (Howe). Yep, like many, I would be a crap chairman (and manager). I'll stick to supporting. COYS
Cortese at the time remarked that Adkins was an honourable man, which we all took to be a dig at Pardew at the time.
