There were also unconfirmed reports that when Sir Matt Busby gave his team talk before the start of a game he would say but seven words "Get the ball. Give it to George"
He was at man u 11 years. What happened in 74. Why was he loaned out twice and then ended up at stockport?
Back in the day, our fans used to boo the first team, even if they won their game, if they never entertained the crowd they were booed off the pitch. I remember reading a book about Duncan Edwards, the crowd were so pissed off after a win against Villa (IIRC) that they vented their frustrations as they thought players on £15 per week should be giving more. FFWD 50 odd years and the combined wage of last nights team was probably £1.3m per week, for the 14 players that set foot on the pitch in United shirts. They delivered a lacklustre, half-arsed effort all because they don't seem to be agreeing with the managers philosophy. We settle for far-far-far less these days, we've developed as a nation to accept mediocre so the players deliver that more often than not.
Best ended his career here with the San Jose Earthquakes. His night life never missed a beat while here. Endless stories of him, probably all true. He used to drink at a place called the Brittania Arms, where he insulted almost every man who walked in the door, and slept with most of the women. He had a few brilliant moments on the pitch here also. My best friend at the time was from Bradford, a big ManU fan, he always told me Best was the greatest ever. He played darts with him on several occasions and I asked what kind of man he was... "a complete prick" was the answer
