Who will "come back" next season strongest?

Discussion in 'The Premier League' started by Hoddle is a god, Apr 1, 2016.

  1. You are wumming, Fossil, but you make a valid point.

Yes, on the logic I have set out, I would be forced to accept that should Spurs finish higher than 5th this season (which have been our average position over the past decade), it would be a fluke.

That's a pretty damning assessment of Pochettino and the players. Finishing third will be a fluke result?!

  3. You haven't answered my questions.

The definition of fluke includes both surprising luck and the idea of an unlikely occurrence. It's the combination of these elements that create the fluke.

  4. Not at all. Most Spurs fans were probably expecting us to finish 6th, this season. 5th would have meant that Poch had got his young team back to where we were under Redknapp, which in such a short space of time would have been a magnificent achievement. I think he would have achieved that, but I would have settled for 6th, in another development year.

I think the club has to be extremely careful not to read too much into this season. I'd hate for United, Chelsea, Arsenal, 'Pool and City all to get their acts together next season, for us to finish 6th behind them all, and for Levy to consider that a failure on Poch's part, leading to his sacking. I think that would be a massive mistake.

Do you think Mahrez, Vardy, Kante, Drinkwater, Morgan, Huth, Simpson and all the rest playing so well is a fluke?

I think that top six was pretty much our expectation at the start of the season. We knew nothing of Alli, didn't know of Kane could reproduce last season - there were many other uncertainties too. However, to his credit, Pochettino has formed a very good young side. If we hold them together, I expect us to be up there challenging next year.

I don't see you falling away next season.

I think saying Spurs' season has been a fluke is a very odd, almost ignorant, statement, especially coming from a Spurs fan.

I've answered your question as I see it. As I say, a fluke to me is a pure random stroke of extreme fortune or misfortune.

I don't believe that's the case here. Yes, a degree of luck is involved in Leicester's current position, but total fluke? No, not for me.

  9. Not necessarily.

However, you are failing to grasp the nature of a fluke. It's the combination of everything that makes it a fluke.

Getting all of those players to play so well in one season may not, of itself, be worthy of being called a fluke; but having that coincide with all of United, Chelsea, City, Arsenal, and 'Pool playing so badly - that is the fluke.

It's not a fluke, it's very clever talent spotting and team building.

The same fluke that has propelled Spurs to second and an eventual third placed finish.

You're preaching to the choir mate. It's HIAG who thinks you're having a fluke season.

I think he's having a breakdown of some sort.

  13. So, you are trying to convince yourself that Leicester playing so well, coinciding with all of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, City and 'Pool having an indifferent season is not a fluke?

For you to believe that, NSIS, you would have to have convinced yourself that it was expected that all of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, City and 'Pool would all choose this season to play so badly. If you had been able to predict that, you would have cleaned up at the bookies, my friend!

  14. It's less of a fluke, given the fact that Spurs have been knocking on the door of the top 3 for some while. It's less of a fluke than Leicester winning the title, that's for sure.

Well, he has his opinion, I have mine. That's what makes a debate.

As you say, I think the so called big boys have had a massive wake up call. Like, "we've spent hundreds of millions on players, managers, etc, and Leicester and Spurs are way ahead of us!" "How can that be?!"

  16. So, Stan, you believe that it was expected that all of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, City and 'Pool would have had such an indifferent season this season?

Is that what you are saying?

Utd, Pool played badly last season. The Goons are pretty much where they always are. Only really City & Chelsea have had unexpectedly poor seasons.

As has been said, Leicester have won 20 of 32 Premiership games, and only lost 3. That's not luck!...

... in an attempt to save the board from another couple of hundred posts where you continually remind Stan of his assertion that Leicester are going to rule the roost - despite the fact that he didn't actually make it ... you have form in that regard ....<laugh>

  20. If any of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, City or 'Pool had played in accordance with the predictions of the professional pundits, do you still believe that Spurs would be where they are now?

Do you think that all of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, City, and 'Pool will each have the same indifferent season next season, or the season after that, or the season after that?
