I'm not so sure. Poch didn't have the squad primed last season to play the type of game that he likes to play, and it cost us massively in terms of our leaky defence. I'm sure that Poch will have been working hard to fix that. If he doesn't fix it, he probably isn't going to be in a job for very long. Looking at the players that have come in, gone out, and those that we appear to be wanting to get rid of, I am confident that Poch is looking to get everything set up the way he wants it. If he gets it right, we'll be in with a shout at top 4, which means that we'll have to displace either Arsenal or United. Of the two, I see United being the weakest.

It's not that illogical. European football isn't likely to increase your points tally. However, the improved squad should outweigh that significantly.

It's not necessarily going to decrease it either though, especially as you've said, with the improved squad. When you take everything into account the only logical thing you can say is that logic had very little to do with anything he's said.

I think it's reasonable to assume top 4 will be the same teams. I doubt with the squad we have we'll win the title though. The signings by Woodward have been made to keep the masses happy. Opportunism at its finest.

Agreed. Being in Europe decreases points tally in the league.

That is the logic which applies to Barca's, Bayern's & Chelsea's of the world. But will not be applicable to Manures - ofcourse <doh>

<laugh> I feel we're getting at hair splitting stage here. However, even IF that were true (and when you factor in all variables I dont believe it is) it still doesnt equate to finishing outside top 4 let alone range of 5th to 7th.

That's the top 4 for me, although United could finish a place higher or further down, they squeeze forth thanks to some rather dodgy refereeing decisions, and that was without CL football. Both Van Gaal and De Gea will be shown to be over-rated, although tbh, De Gea proves it fairly often, a good shot stopper but everything else is average for the EPL at best. The managers in the EPL are too strong for Van Gaal.
I was surprised Chelsea sold Cech to Arsenal, A strong box-box midfielder in the Viera mold would see them give Chelsea a run for their money, I've always thought they should've gone for Felleini.
City have the players but, like United, I don't rate the manager that highly, they do have a defence though.

well.... In Europe, our points tally was higher than when not in Europe. There's one exception of course.

Fellaini as their box to box midfielder...? It takes him about ten minutes to get from one box to the next!

It's not that inconceivable that Palace could finish seventh, is it?

Who are the other contenders? Southampton, Stoke, Swansea and Everton? I'd fancy them to finish above Everton for a start.
 
I dislike Palace immensely, but outside the top 6 it becomes a bit of a lottery. Southampton, Stoke, Villa, West Ham, Swansea, Everton all have shout of being 7th, so I plumbed for Palace. Pardew is a great fit there and won't have his best players sold from under him for a quick profit that's not put back into the team, they have one of the most unappreciated gems of the EPL in Bolasie, who with Cabaye and Zaha pose a significant threat from midfield, probably the most threatening in the EPL, the signing of Connor Wickham also gives them the target man for the wide men to hit.
