So looks like Mourinho's ruled himself out (as if it was gonna happen anyway lol), so prepare for the days of Gary Monk, David Moyes, or Tony Pullis!

Sod it, let's just give Shola the job.

If the takeover goes through, I could see Rafa being re-appointed.

However, if it doesn't then we'd have to be more realistic and accept that we're not going to get a manager in the same calibre as Rafa.

A number of the options (Bruce, Grant, Monk, Moyes and Ranieri) are painful. Below are a few that could be "ok" and whilst still disappointing, won't bring me to utter despair:
    • Arteta - thought of highly at City and Arsenal and learnt under one of the best. Seems like a solid head coach but a step up to manager could be difficult. Plus, we won't be able to play like City of course...
    • Dyche - probably most 'like for like' with Rafa. Solid defensive style and good motivator. Not sure if he'd come to us mind.
    • Van Bronckhorst - did a pretty positive job at Feyenoord and could be worth a go.

Can't see Arteta leaving, not sure if he would want to go solo yet, and sacrificing the glory of City to the grimness of here would be a brave move.

Dyche would never leave Burnley for us, they've been loyal to him and he's built something there, he'd only move for a big step upwards, not a club in chaos.

Van Brockhurst maybe, but unproven outside Holland and the Dutch league is dire.

I think it will need to be more left field if the takeover doesn't happen. A good club looking for a cheaper option more in keeping with our current status, would look to get a Pochettino type in. Look to Europe's leagues or the lower echelons in England for a manager playing a progressive modern style of football but is at a club where its not possible to pull up too many trees. You have to do good research and have the right recruiters involved. That is what Southampton did with Poch. Everyone knew who he was but knew little of his managerial career.

We would get some dinosaur who has fallen out of favour within the game. Someone who has been left behind so is desperate enough to accept any old **** from Mike. I still think Bryan Robson is right up Ashley's street. Likes a power drink and you can find bits of success in his managerial career.

If the takeover goes through I could see Rafa returning or someone like Arteta or Mourinho.

More than likely. However the fact remains that this bidder claimed to have an agreement in place and had submitted proof of funds etc to the PL. We've heard nothing to the contrary from them, the PL or NUFC. So you'd have to assume that assessment is ongoing. If not the takeover was bullshit anyway and we just had another chancer on our hands.

Avoiding some of the names that have already been thrown around:

Terry Venables - not done anything of note for years
Paul Merson - just to add to the circus
Arsene Wenger - used to not having a budget, good youth development
Ruud Gullit - 20 years on, lets see if he can bring sexy back
Patrick Kluivert - experienced several coaching roles and working in international set-up.

LOL that's a proper brigade of old has been knackers!

    The latest gossip:

Nice boss Patrick Vieira, 43, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, 39, and Manchester Citycoach Mikel Arteta, 37, are all on Newcastle'sshortlist to replace Rafa Benitez.

Vieira I'd be very happy with, but I don't see him coming, Gerrard no thanks - one season in management in a mickey mouse league, Arteta definitely worth a go IF hell leave Man City (unlikely)
