I see a lack of support for Gordon Banks, But there are different types of 'Keeper'. When I first went to Roker Park, as a youngster, my memories are of Willie Fraser. He had the useful habit of positioning himself in the right place by cutting off the angles. Not spectacular, but very effective. His 'cover' was johnny Bolland, very much a 'shot stopper'. Great to watch his spectacular dives. Len Shackleton claimed that best positional keeper was Jack Fairbrother who he played with at N/C. He was like a ball magnet, claimed Shack. The opposition seemed to aim at him. We had Lionel Perez, in my opinion the best shot stopper I have ever seen. Unfortunately, he may well have been the second worst Goalkeeper at the same time because of his positioning. or lack of it. SAFC have been lucky over the years to have had some excellent Keepers. Most have been mentioned on this thread. I have a soft spot though for Mart Poom. The POOMINATOR That towering header of his would have been enough on it's own to justify his place on the shortlist, but he was also one of our best. He was let go far too early. I'm now starting to drift along on clouds of nostalgia. A pleasure even if it's not what it used to be!
