I think if Villa lose today, then a draw would make us safe as even if Wigan beat Arsenal as they are playing Villa on the last day they can't both win and we would be above both.

A draw would leave us safe in that scenario; it would not leave Sunderland safe, though.

In theory we could lose to Stoke about 15-0 and hence drop below Villa on the final day, given that scenario. But yes, putting that highly unrealistic outcome aside, your scenario would put us safe. (But not Sunderland - I don't know where the Sunderland fan got his comment from)

True - however, I think we could all be safe after tuesday if Wigan lose to Arsenal...though stranger things have happened!

Yeah, you're technically correct, which is the best kind of correct...however, if we manage to ship the largest defeat in Prem history to a team that averages less than a goal per game, we ought to disavow all knowledge of the club and start following curling instead.

Yeah, but if we went into the last day in a position where we had to lose 15-0 and Wigan had to beat Villa 37-8 while only fielding left-footed players there'd be some misery on here pointing out that "it's not time to celebrate, we're not mathematically safe"

    <doh>

I did say we would be safe, if we draw because I expect Arsenal to beat Wigan. If that happens then we are safe.

But hey, just cut and paste part of what I have said to make yourself an argument. <ok>

To be fair you said mathematically safe. If you said if you draw today you would be 95% safe, no one would argue with that. But mathematically safe implies that it would be impossible for you to go down, which is not true.

    Ok then,

We will be mathematically safe if we draw and Arsenal beat Wigan, which I would expect.

For us I don't think it matters if we draw or lose to Sunderland, with regards to staying up. Wigan are 4 points behind us and with the goal difference its essentially 5 points so the only way they can catch us is by winning both games.

With that in mind we may as well just go all out for the win and aim to catch West Ham on the last day.

It doesn't with regard to Wigan, but it could with this scenario:

Wigan beats Arsenal and Villa, finishes on 41 points.
Newcastle and Norwich win one of their first two games, finish on 41 points.
Sunderland beats us, finishes on 41 points.

In that scenario, losing that Sunderland game means that we go down with 39 points.

...or Benteke could will Villa to victory against Chelsea, rendering it moot. 1-0.

Indeed. Putting GD aside, it is correct to say that a draw for us tomorrow has absolutely no impact on us vs Wigan at all. However it does still have an impact vs the others around us. It could even take us above Fulham.

Me too, its unlikely we can catch them but we should be aiming for it.

After yesterday I'm far less certain that Arsenal will beat Wigan. Let's hope we can get the job done today!

Wigan will be on high, but lets be honest they have not played as well in the league, it appears they're more cup players, and Arsenal have a lot to play for, they Have a good team and are well rested. But anything can happen?

Arsenal cannot afford to miss out on a Champions league spot so they will be fired up. Wigan will be fighting for their lives. Should be a great game. I would love Wigan to survive because I think Martinez is a really good manager but not at our expense.
