The Romantic in me wants to see AFC Wimbledon do well. I've seen them play a few pre-season friendlies. Not made it to a league game yet however.
This is what you get if you let the chattering classes talk about football. Clearly an armchair supporter of one of the big clubs who has decided to take his yummy young family along to occasional game at the local lower league outfit. He probably think it reinforces his green credentials in some way and as he's an intellectual he thought he'd also write about it and share his wisdom with us. Thanks, now toddle off back to Waitrose where you normally spend your Saturday aftrenoons.
It was a guardian article Aaaaarrggh so no shock there Ill always be a ranger I couldn't possibly be anything else. Living in Sheffield though I do go to Hillsboro quite a bit with mates who have spare ST for odd games and must confess to a soft spot for them as they are useless and have this massive faded stadium and a real downbeat charm. If and when they do score or even win I politely applaud their efforts but I could never 'celebrate' like a true Owl would. It's the same at chesterfield. The new chesvegas stadium isn't far from me at all and there is a certain charm in lower league football, a pie and a bovril Change clubs though? No thanks
You can support my club if any of you fancy a change. Third division with 79 other teams. Have to reach top 4 in you individual mini table of 20 to reach the play-offs with the same from other mini tables which we are just underachieving because we are useless away. We are rarely televised so if you don't live in Barcelona you're ****ed, and we're having to ask for texts worth a couple of euros from fans so we can afford to keep our facilities. Any takers?..no? Suit yourselves!
I know a bloke that used to be a Leeds fan but he switched to Arsenal. A very nice chap in every way but I couldn't help but lose some respect for him. Would I have lost respect for him if he'd changed his wife or religion? No. Does that make sense? No.
I know a guy who was a Man Utd fan and decided it was a pile of ****e... Supports Brentford now and is a much happier man...no glory hunting, just tyfying the the sheer ignorance and stupidity of "die hard life long fans"... How many fans have spent 100K of improvements of thier own house...only to find Dehnam Village is better... Not many balanced arguments here.....Im leaving it until it gets so saturated with "die hard cant see the wood" fans.before i shake it up a bit cant you see the ignorance?
I once got the chance to challenge David 'Kid' Jensen on his change from QPR to Palace. It was at a CPFC do (don't ask but was a freebie in my defence!) He didn't like it at all. He just mumbled about how he used to live by the ground and that was why he used to go to qpr. He was clearly embarassed though and I enjoyed that embarassment
I will always support QPR. We don't need to support another team ... one is provided for us at the start (and then again in the middle) of each season - or so it seems these days! How many players have we used in the last 3 seasons? 50? More?
"Too f'ing right man", as almost 40 years ago my Scottish oil exploration mechanic, a man of few words, used to say to me when agreeing on a point.
The OP is different to the majority as he didn't support the team where he lived, it wasn't in his blood and it sounds like he had nothing linking him to his club.
I was brought a Chelsea sports bag for xmas at the age of 4/5 I was told and I couldn't bring myself to take to it. My family were all Brighton fans and I although i was taken I couldn't take to them either ... For me it was The Big Match: I was already QPR by the time it was first screened but my soul was full after what was the best football on the tele Get in there Dave ... If I can live nearly my entire life over here, supprot Rangers in League Div 1, including when they lost to Vauxhall Motors I am sure not changing my support any time soon.
Strangely, on this very subject, I was at the Tower Hotel this morning and who should walk past my car? None other than David Mellor, famous for ditching Fulham in favour of Chelsea because John Major, Prime Minister at the time, was a big Scum supporter and Mellor was an arsehole-crawler. I can see why Richard Littlejohn describes him as 'Mellorphant Man', he really is incredibly ugly, far worse in the flesh than he looks on telly and dressed ridiculously in shorts and a track-suit top. Later I was talking to another guy about football, he was a Man U fan but also supported his home-town club Carlisle. He said their two best moments were topping the old Division One for two weeks in August 1974, their only season in the top flight and winning the whatever it is called cup that Div 3 & 4 teams play for in the 90s. Amazing how such insignificant things mean so much to the 'average' club. It seems many 'fans' support their local club but also follow one of the big clubs like Man U or Chelsea. I can't imagine ever wanting to follow any other 'bigger' club, yet have no problem following smaller teams like Dulwich Hamlet who are just down the road from where I live and you actually can really 'connect' with a team like that as there is a much more relaxed atmosphere at that level. As for actually changing the club you support, it really isn't negotiable is it?...
http://www.qpr.co.uk/team/QPR-ladies/ QPR Ladies have more balls than that lot we've been supporting. Losing at home to Brighton is a bit dire though although come next season the men will probably match that unfortunately.
Nothing wrong with second loves particularly when you live a couple of hundred miles away from LR. I've been wondering for some time about trundling along to York City now that they're back in the League (for now) and recall a cracking game at Gateshead last season when they lost to Southport on a freezing November night. I'm also on a promise by a die hard factory manager to go with him to Hartlepools'game with Brentford next month. Who knows it could be the prelude to a return to derby games with the bees next season. However I doubt whether any true fan would turn down the chance to watch his team just because they'r going through a rough patch and the local boys happen to be doing well at the time.
