My point was the impact it made world wide media wise, and yes it did Herald success but not from day one ok
I'm surprised people haven't been mentioning Ba very much so far - he looks to be the real deal. Big problem is that he'll be in the ACON during the transfer window and would we want to pay a big fee (it'd have to be £20m+) for a player who's 26 (?), won't be able to play for us for a few weeks and might pick up an injury in the ACON. Other than that I think he'd be perfect. I'll always take a player that's proved himself in the EPL over someone from overseas.
Don't think Levy is going to pay that much, although Newcastle wil want that at least. My thinking is let Pav go wherever his last resort club is, meanwhile line up a decent replacement like Aumari and bring in the marquee player in the summer.
Everyone on our board is going crazy about Ba. He looks a good player but neither of our teams should be looking at him until he's proven his consistency. Olic would be a good fit for Spurs, definitely better than Defoe and Pav, has the technique and workrate to succeed in England. Podolski to Liverpool rumours are rife at the moment, haven't heard as many regarding Arsenal or Spurs as in the summer.
Sorry - when I said "proved himself in the EPL" I meant "proved to be good in the EPL". It's amazing how often tabloids and managers don't see this distinction. Bendtner certainly is proven at the EPL level. Titus Bramble is also a proven EPL player. Jermain Jenas too. I think if I played at the weekend for Spurs you could also say that I was proven at the EPL level after about ten minutes.
Ba is a no for me, if we wanted him we should have got him for free in the summer, otherwise the 20 odd million we will have to pay will be based on half a season of good form which is just not acceptable. People mentioning Taylor-Fletcher, Zamora etc need to have a look at our league position, those are signings for teams in a relegation scrap. The only realistic marquee signing we could make in the striking department would be Leandro.
Why do people keep saying this? Everyone seems to forget that he got seven goals in ten starts or something for West Ham in the second half of last season. He finished their top scorer despite only being there from late January. Not to mention the stiff competition provided by Robbie Keane of course . He's different to Carroll in that you can see he's a proper player. Carroll always looked like a bit of a big blockbuster of a striker whose touch and technique looked suspect (I was saying it at the time). Ba, on the other hand, looks a proper footballer.
IF you are referring to me, I don't need to have a look at our league position, I know where we are. I suggest that you read my post. I stand by my comments.
I too can see no point in buying a Zamora/Taylor-Fletcher etc. If you're looking for cover/competition for Ade then you need to imagine that we're away to Man City/Chelsea and Ade can't play. Do you really think Zamora would do? Do you think any of the teams around us (or even Liverpool) would want any of those players? I just can't see the point of players who are clearly not good enough. Quality players like Sandro and Krancjar can't get into our starting 11. Zamora's not in their league.
And me, he admitted in a newspaper he'd never been in such form before...so how long will it last? I remember loads of posters wanting us to sign a certain Johan Elmander from Bolton who had a little purple patch of goal scoring...what do they have to say for themselves now I wonder! Ashley and Llambias are twats to deal with, and they'll want big money, a risky punt imo, if they value him at 20m, you can get a CL experienced forward for that.
As I said, if we are impressed with Ba now, we should have been impressed with him in June, as he has continued on similar form to last year. How can his value have gone up by £20 million in half a season when his form has stayed more or less the same?
Hmm - that bit in bold is food for thought. However - just cos some people said silly things about Elmander (a player of whom John Stuart Hall said "He's already scored two goals this season" a couple of years ago when it was February or something) doesn't mean that all things said about potential signings by all people are just as knee-jerk. Elmander had a good month or so - Ba's been doing it for a year now. I might be wrong about Ba - but I'm positive that I'm more justified in my opinion that those people were about Elmander. And does £20m get you a CL-experienced striker? In January? Cos last time I looked it's get you Darren Bent, just over half an Andy Carroll, David Bentley...a few years ago Defoe (with no CL experience) was £15m. Anyway - I know the price we're talking about is irrelevant cos it's just numbers off the top of my head. I know Ashley will try to get as much as possible and that's a problem but all I'm saying is that paying high for Ba is very different to paying high for Carroll. Cos Ba looks a much better player.
Not sure I get your point. If I'd said that we should have bought him in June (when he'd only played for a few months) then that would have been OK but when he's been doing it for a year somehow that makes the case for signing him weaker? His value's increased cos he was on a free in the summer. So hardly surprising, then. Plus he's now a player who has scored 21 goals in the calendar year since he's been in the country - half the time in a very poor team.
Tell you what, why don't you read my post as well? Because your reply is as pointless as VY's. I really can't be bothered with people who don't even read my posts yet take pot shots at them. PS How is a top player going to be content to be cover for Ade? PPS I see you took a cheap shot at Jenas too, who is Prem proven in the sense that for years he was a decent Prem player.
