As - The best player to ever grace the SAFC shirt: The best signing SAFC have ever made: The worst player we have ever had: The worst signing we have ever made: And - Who, that we have been linked with in the past that we didn't sign, would you have liked to have seen sign for us...(e.g. the annual Charles N'zogbia articles): Finally, why...
For me best player we have ever signed is arca Unfortunately reid didnt make the best use of him. Worst signing ( amongst the many made by one of our worst ever managers in terms of criminal wastes of money ) would be chimbonda. Honorable mentions to halford, prica and milton Nunez. Nzogbia did nothing after he left wigan just as bent did nothing after he left us. Would have loved to have seen us sign permanently one of Evans, rose or alonso
1st one is difficult lots to chose from, But Gary Rowell was immense during his time I think Don Hutchinson was a great signing, shame he didn't stay longer Worst...Rodwell, and I would say Grigg isn't far away Worst signing has to be Nunez, calamity that was. I remember we were linked with Alex Sabella, great footballer at the time, wish he would have joined us.
Best ever player to grace the shirt was Baxter. Well past his best when we signed him but I saw him against united at roker park in the 60's. He played them by himself, best law charlton et al. On his game he made it look so easy
Baxter Gyan or Claudio Marangoni Hurley spoilt for choice here but Rod Belfitt hasnt been mentioned yet. Rodwell or Grigg one bled the club dry the other scuppered any chance of a quick recovery Sabella was Baxter like, but it has to be Virgil Van Dyke, I was convinced for months we would swap Fletcher and a couple of million for him
The best player to ever grace the SAFC shirt: Would have this down as Malbranque or Sessegnon based on what I've lived through, Sess was a more explosive player but in terms of dribbling ability Malbranque was horrifying (particularly with his tab habit...) The best signing SAFC have ever made: Think it would be hard to look past Darren Bent, shame how it ended but probably the best goalscorer in the shirt I have yet to see. The worst player we have ever had: Jeff Whitley. Legitimately no idea what he brought to the team yet was picked every week... The worst signing we have ever made: Far too many to choose from here looking back! Could probably pick an absolutely awful one each transfer market... Connor McLaughlin, Will Grigg, Lee Camp, Diakhite, Milton Nunez etc. Lee Camp probably takes the biscuit for me though. Player linked with but never signed... Ibrahimovic... There was the link years ago and whilst he I don't think he would of blossomed as much as he did, his footballing brain would have served gloriously
Best player: SKP Best signing: ignoring the above, Niall Quinn Worst Player: Conor Mcglaughlin Worst Signing: it's a tie - Jack Rodwell/Ricky Alvarez Player we were linked to that I'd have liked to sign: Jonny Evans. I was convinced when we had him on loan that he was one of the classiest centre backs I'd ever watched. He was always so composed. Even at Man Utd he got to a point where he was pushing Ferdinand and Vidic hard. I will never understand why they let him go ahead of Smalling and Jones, but he seems to be doing a great job for Leicester as well. He could have been the foundations upon which we built a much stronger team to be more than just relegation battlers in that league.
Lots of good players, lots of bad. One of my favourites would be Niall Quinn. Can't think of anyone worse than Chodwell. Despicable wage thief and polar opposite to the gentleman above. Special mention to Jimmy Thorpe. Should of signed Bob Paisley as a player then in later years Brian Clough as assistant manager to Paisley.
My favourite but not necessarily best was Tony Towers. He could tackle, pass a ball to one of our players!!, Score a goal and stick the boot in when required. He was also a leader. Not many about with those qualities nowadays
Saw my first game in 1967, and for me the best player and best signing are the same.. The one and only Super Kevin Phillips.
Tough one. I'll go with Phillips for the best for obvious reasons. Best signing has to be swapping Altidore for Defoe, what an upgrade that was. I know we didn't have him for long but as a bit of business it was superb. Worst player, in terms of an overall signing it doesn't get worse than Rodwell but on the pitch I thought Bridcutt was a total waste of a squad number. Shout out to Djilibodji too. The player I wish we had signed is M'Vila who was also a contender for best player I've seen for us. Pure class. Never mind we got Ndong instead. If you'd asked about favourite players we'll never have a player I'll like more than Arca.
The best player to ever grace the SAFC shirt: Super Kev - Golden boot what more can you say The best signing SAFC have ever made: Jermain Defoe - to think that we swapped him for Jozy Altidore The worst player we have ever had: Rodwell - The worst signing we have ever made: Alvarez - 11 appearances 1 goal for an estimated £20m Player linked with but never signed Diego Armando Maradona If the rumours are to be believed - just watch the documentary on his time at Napoli.
Best Player - Kevin Phillips (so many goals, unbelievable 4 seasons we had) Best Signing - Niall Quinn (Without him, there was no Drumavill, no Keane, no resurgence, no hope) Worst Player - Donald Love or James Vaughan Worst Signing - Jack Rodwell Linked - Robbie Keane
Had to google Thorpe - thanks for the lead. There is a pretty good Jim Thorpe story on this side of the pond as well.
The best player is a tough one, my personal favourite would be Chris Makin, a full back I aspired to be, hard tacking, gave his all The best signing - in my lifetime, probably Philips Worst ever player - Rodwell for the fact he took the piss and didn't care who knew Worst signing - Flo, we needed a new Quinn, we got a wet quim
