I think it was Ben Arfa behind Shola and Ba, but either way it was stupidly attacking and completely negated any width. Its a formation that relies on good attacking fullbacks of which we have one (who's only started two games).

Interesting thing is Colly, Obertan barely played in a 442 in France as a winger or even at Man U. He played as a right sided forward a la Walcott. He may get back in front of Simpson but he cannot defend and just lets men drift off the back of him at will. He also just stands off and lets crosses come in. Now I'm not about to say Benni is gonna graft his socks off, but I think he'll do as much good defensively as Obertan. I want to give Obertan time but my suspicion is the lad has no footballing brain and will only ever be useful as a forward. I personally think he is another David Bellion. Also we didn't really need to worry about Benni drifting on Saturday or not getting back as much. Swansea set up exactly as anybody with half a brain thought they would. Guile was always gonna be needed in a game where we going to dominate throughout as they set up to keep a clean sheet.

Anyway against Everton he got the balance perfect between drifting inside and staying out. He got back well and proved an excellent release ball driving down the left wing. He cut inside on occasions but personally I encourage that. Its not like everytime he got the ball he cut inside. He did most of his damage on the actual wing. He can play wide in a 442 without doubt for me.

I wonder if Obertan would be any better as a striker? He has the talent but clearly has no brain in that gigantic head.

I decided that his new nickname is Forrest, as I spend the entire game screaming at him to run (at his full back).

If there's no space, then you bring on a superb player who can find space! If he didn't think HBA would do it, what the hell did he think the Ameobi brothers would do?

Swansea locked us out, and we really needed someone like HBA to try and weed their way through and find a pocket of space. No defence is ever watertight, and you need those superior players to open them up. Ba and Best had absolutely no space and no opportunities in headers, so the evidence was there that more of the same wasn't going to suddenly start working.

There was no guarantee that HBA would have won us the game, but he would have gave us a far better chance.

How is that? He felt HBA wouldnt have an impact, so rested him for a midweek game. It's as if people actually want unnecessary drama at this club sometimes.

If Shola scores with his second touch of the ball (or if someone followed up for a tap in) its a tactical masterstroke and Pardews a hero, as it is Vorm saves and Pardews an idiot. Perils of being a football manager frankly.

This. Disagreeing with the manager doesnt mean he is wrong, certainly not an idiot. If Ben Arfa had came on and been **** I bet people would probably have the audacity to slate that decision as well.

I vaguely understand Pardew's thinking. I would rather a fully fit and up-for-it Ben Arfa trying to prove he deserves a place playing against West Brom <ok>

    Me, I can :)

This sounds quite logical in fairness:

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newc...rfa-ready-for-west-brom-clash-72703-29976392/

Besides, you say Sammi isn't ready... I think he's brilliant! He's not qquite there yet, but he needs the games to get there, I would say.

C'mon lads, couple of bad results with an injury crisis and it's nearly 'Pardew out' time already!

Lets get behinfdthe manager and the team ay, they need us to toe the line. We need to be stable and strong in the next window or players we need will be going.

    <cheers>

    Excerpt:

Pardew - “Sometimes you’ve got to fuel your players, and the disappointment he had about not getting on might fuel him for Wednesday night.

“When you get a 0-0, you always think of something else.”

Yet, Pardew admitted the thought of bringing Ben Arfa on had crossed his mind.

He said: “A couple of times I thought about (bringing on) Hatem, but I just felt they were so deep, with so many numbers back, that I did not think he would find any space, if I am honest.

“He looks for pockets, and there weren’t any.”

Explaining his logic in going for the Ameobi brothers rather than the French international, Pardew said: “Actually, I thought that maybe a diagonal coming in that box with Shola climbing on the back of a centre-half might just be enough.

“As he was he had half a chance at a set play, and Sammy ended up winning a cross at the far post.

“That was really the only time we had the space to get a goal.”

Well thats where you are totally wrong and just dont understand why myself and others are going on about HBA.

If he brought on arguably our most talented player and it hadn't had worked. Not one of us would have complained. NOT ONE.

Would Fergie not bring on Rooney when 0-0 at home to Swansea. Would Wenger not bring on RVP? Would Dalglish not bring on Saurez?

None of those players are just back from a year out, and Ben Arfa is not established as our best player at all. He has talent but he hasnt shown enough yet to be seen as so important to our team as those players are to their respective teams.

Well I guess you have a picture of him representing yourself because you think he's good looking then.....nothing to do with his talent as a player.

What the **** are you talking about? I said he's a good player, but are you seriously suggesting he's as important to us as RVP and Rooney are to Arsenal and Man United? He's done nothing here YET, besides the wonder goal @ Everton.

I love your confidence in your ability to predict other people's reactions to events that never occured.

You probably are partly right in that there are as many people who think that HBA can do no wrong as there are who think Shola can do no right. If I was a manager and my only desire was to pander to the fans preferences, then bringing on HBA is the safe option. If Pardew actually is more interested in winning the game, however, then he has to decide who is likely to be more effetive. I've seen a lot more end product from Shola this year than from HBA. Also, with Swansea defending deep, size was likely to be more of an advantage than dribbling skills.
