Apparently Steer took a bit of stick from fans who were calling for Dillon Phillips yesterday. Tough on Steer maybe, but even tougher on Phillips to be given the number one jersey then dropped having done nothing wrong. He could maybe have stopped one goal, but it was hardly a goalkeeping howler. Reports on CL from those who were there say that Steer's distribution was awful, so if he doesn't get dropped it will rub salt in for Phillips. The end result will be that we will be without a goalie at all this summer. Rudd and Amos were good goalies but despite that we're still in L1, and it's possible that if Phillips had been given his chance he would have progressed to be a very good goalie by now, in the same way as Amos did. Mind you, that would only result in him being sold.
Bowyer justified Dillon’s dropping by saying Steer’s distribution was better, and suited our tactic of playing out from the back. Yesterday Bowyer hooked Bielik at half time, saying he was taking too many touches playing out from the back. #wtf
Dils is clearly just as good a keeper as Steer but obviously it was negotiated with Villa that either a) Steer plays in the league if fit as part of the loan deal OR b) We do not have to pay Steer's wages if he starts the League games..
From what I have seen the goalkeeping position is not a problem. The defence, IE the defenders are. We have a midfielder Dijksteel playing right back, we have a central midfielder Pratley playing centre half. We have a right back, Solly playing left back. Also midfield is a problem, where are the goals? Aribo, Ward, Fosu, Cullen, Reeves, Marshall, have either not scored or have got one or two. If Taylor or Grant don’t score, we are ****ed.
Clearly you are correct in your observations, but the goalkeeping position is the elephant in the room, showing that things ain't right.
For me steer takes a bit of stick because a lot of us are frustrated for Phillips. Phillips for me over the last couple of years hasn't done a lot wrong when his come into the team. It just so happens we got rudd and Amos in and they were better keepers, we now some of us think steer is much better. Some have said steer needs a run in the team to help him out, where's Phillips proper run in the team.
I saw Clarke play for the U23s last week and he is a million miles away from playing in the first team. He has played two 45 minutes for the U23s.
Thanks for this DickPlumb. I thought things had gone a bit quiet lately regarding Billy Clarke. If he was a week away from a first team return we would expect news of it to be all over the local online papers and the website. He must not be rushed back. If his recovery is not going as quickly as previously hoped it is important that he has the time he needs.
Unless Steer gets injured, Saturday was the last time we'll see Phillips. He's behaved in a very professional manner, warming the bench while we improve other teams' goalies, and remain in L1. Good luck to him wherever he goes.
