Depends what you want to spend. I went to the Whisky Store in the Metrocentre. I gave them a budget and type, they gave me their best recommendations. The blended whisky they suggested for my gran (doesn't do single malt), she absolutely loved it and requests every year now (Roe and Co Irish Whiskey). Same for the single malt I got my mate. I'm a rum man so no idea on it, but they seem to know their ****.

Not to be pedantic or anything but whiskey spelled with an "E" is Irish and whisky spelled with no "E" is Scottish,I can recommend some lovely Irish whiskies if you like:emoticon-0148-yes:

Aye if he's scottish he'll not like it much if you call it whiskey.

The main question is does he like smoky whisky or not? If he likes smoke then some good bets are:

Talisker 10 (don't get Talisker Skye it's cheap ****e for tourists)
Ardberg (can be expensive but is amazing stuff)
Laphroig 10 (again, don't buy the 'Select' - it's their knockoff brand and not worth the money)
Bowmore 10

Usually supermarkets have an offer on at least one of these, putting them closer to £30 than £40

If he doesn't like smoky whisky then I recommend going for something sherry cask or port cask

Balvenie Doublewood
Glenmorangie Lasanta
Dalmore 12


A completely left field option is the Beinn Dhu whisky, although it's about £50. Tastes a bit like dark chocolate.

If money is an issue consider getting a half bottle of a good one. Just try and avoid the cheap brands from big distilleries - they have responded to the whisky boom to bottle a lot of unmature crap and stuck the same brand on it, because they can't wind the clock back 10 years and produce more of the good stuff. However it's barely whisky in most cases (i.e. about three years old) and tastes like cheap gin.

Here you go. Peruvian Black Corn Whisky. Relatively cheap although they only sell it there so flight could be quite expensive.

To be fair, best way of answering this is having an idea of budget, Scotch Whiskey's can run into the hundreds and thousands of pounds depending on age etc.

Low budget of £40ish - Tobermory, High end budget of in the £000's Rosebank.

Another option would be to know where in Scotland he comes from and get one from the most local distillery to where he was born.

This has turned out to be a very good suggestion as low and behold there is one......i may even have a drive up there when I finish up for Christmas for a day out and have a toby around the place myself and pick his present up in person, and yes on their web page they spell it Whisky :1980_boogie_down: I love learning new **** !!

Uisce Beatha = water of life
that's the name for whiskey in Irish and the Scots gaelic is very similar uisge beatha,hth.

Balvenie 14yr old Carribean Cask is one of the best I have tasted, quite expensive (about £50) but quite often on offer online or I think you can buy it in Sainsburys. If you want something a bit cheaper Auchentoshian American Oak is pretty good as is Tesco Finest Highland 10 yr old single malt.

Balvenie doublewood is probably my favourite non-Islay, lovely stuff
 
Not for now but a new distillery is set to open next year at Wooler called ad gefrin. Won’t be selling any for a few years yet but will be interesting to try a Northumbrian whisky.
