Any recommendations from anyone on a decent drop to buy as a pressie for Xmas? My old man is Scottish and is partial to the odd drop (single malt obvs), me not being a whiskey connoisseur myself I have exhausted the usual options many times with him and looking for something a bit different/unusual that he may not have thought of buying for himself. I've done Laphroaig, Balvennie, Macallan to death and looking for something maybe a bit left field if anyone has any recommendations?
 
Talisker is a good one, as is Glen Livet.

I always get my dad Laphroaig as it's his favourite so it's a safe bet, if you want to vary things up, your can get him the quarter cask version.

I second thatZ Talisker is a good one. It’s quite Peaty mind.

Glenmorangie is my favourite.
 
I have a Glenfiddich IPA Experiment for my Nephew this year, I mainly stick with Irish malts myself as they are my preference, you could try the Bushmills 10 Year Old malt for a change, that would certainly be left field.
 
Glenlivet or Glenfiddich are my two preferences although neither really left field.

Johnny Walker Black label if you go for a blended whisky.
 
To be fair, best way of answering this is having an idea of budget, Scotch Whiskey's can run into the hundreds and thousands of pounds depending on age etc.

Low budget of £40ish - Tobermory, High end budget of in the £000's Rosebank.

Another option would be to know where in Scotland he comes from and get one from the most local distillery to where he was born.

Ardbeg and Laphroaig my favs, but being Islays they're peaty and not everyone likes that. Would recommend Ardbeg 10 if he likes that type though

I had a whisky tasting with the lads from here:

We had five, can't tell you them all but they were all pretty spectacular (bar the Islay, I cannot get away with the smokey/peaty taste, not for me) and the tasting notes on the shop page are accurate. One that does linger in the memory Is I think the Craigellachie - it's like caramelized pineapples dipped in burnt sugar.

Or set up his own still and make it himself, the lazy unloving ****

I'll be honest mate, I'm a businessman, You'd demand London wages. Whereas I would insert a clause in Roly's contract that he forfeits all commissions in any month that he mentions the phrase "2 central midfielders" or "modern game" <laugh><laugh><laugh>
