I was born in Millom and lived there for 24 yrs. Mum was a teacher and tried to teach me to speak" proper" English but my class mates laughed at me so it was easier to talk like they did and avoid the humiliation. After 2yrs in South Africa and 43 yrs here there is not much left but still enough for people to guess my origin.
Ah fantastic, i was in Millom on Saturday playing cricket. I am living in the Whitehaven area but i used to live in Barrow so i have been in your neck of the woods a few times, good old Corney Fell always makes a fun journey. Out of interest how did you end up supporting Hull or are you just a passer by on our forum?
Went back to Millom last year, stayed a night in Barrow and was in the Whitehaven area ( showing my husband where i worked at the old Windscale site) the day the mass murderer went on his rampage.Interesting day!! Am a Darlington Fan married to a Tigers fan of over 65years who is on the Hullmad board. After that it gets a bit complicated!
ah good old Sellafield everyone in about a 50 mile radius seems to work there. Yes Derek Bird, I was lucky enough to be tucked up in bed at uni when it all happened. Came back shortly afterwards was a sureal experience, it turned west cumbria on its head. As 'Copeland' is such a small community everyone was effected in someway or at least knew someone who was. Trouble with Cumbria is the local police force were in no fit shape to cope with something on that scale as the most criminal activity thats happened here previously was a sheep going missing and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary who guard Sellafield cant leave the site boundaries despite having all mannor of weapons at their disposal.
My cousin lives in Millom and worked at the site. One of his daughters works there together with the husband of his other daughter who is a manager. Apparently there are now about 9000 employed there and the de-commisioning of the old Calder Hall nuclear power plant will take another 100yrs. Did you play Cricket against the Millom club? The first daughter i mentioned was married to the secretary of the club but unfortunately he took his own life aged 40 about 3 yrs ago.He also worked at Sellafield. Also I married my first husband in Millom and he worked at the site.
Yep I told you everyone works there and if not on site your company will be directly affected by Sellafields actions. There is no need to ask anyone where their parents work. Currently including permanent staff and contractors there are just over 10200 people working on site. With the government announcing that their will be a new nuclear facility coming at Sellafield that will keep the area busy for many many years with commissioning of the new plant and decommissioning of old the old stuff. Regarding cricket yes I was playing against Millom however both Millom and Haverigg are in our league so I have the privledge of visiting sunny Millom twice a year. I have also played football numerous times against Blackcombe over the years who play their matches within Haverigg Prison’s grounds.
