Depends what sort of holiday TBH. Loved Portland. Awesome historical stuff, beautiful scenery. Had a really nice holiday there. I also love Hunstanton, York, Bristol, Iron Gorge near Telford, Bakewell... A lot of the time there's stuff on your doorstep you take for granted. One year we never went further than 20 miles from home and had a brilliant week. We're now National Trust members after last years Cornwall holiday so plan on using that a lot over this year.
Confused was the wrong word. I know what you were getting at and to a large degree, I agree. I've often wondered why people who complain about the cost of a football ticket will spend a fortune to go away to another country and expect all their home comforts like **** beer and chips.
Cromer too. Mate of the wife lives there. Always feels like I imagine the 60s was. Hair styles, cars and music. Brilliant.
Unfortunately places like Benidorm was built up on such people and its still the same today, on the plus side I suppose is that British needs for British products in Spain props up quite a few businesses and jobs, Spanish jobs as well. Having just come back this week I lost count of the amount of beer swilling blokes on stag do's getting sunburnt and pissed. A few hen do's were also seen but it was mainly stags and apparently its a growing business for the Costas, usually Friday to Monday, I will say though that except for a couple of skirmishes, with the police involved, not the local lads the next level up with guns in their holsters, most of the Brits were just merry or very merry.
Just had to spend 10 mins explaining to the wife and kids why i was laughing out loud while reading a football forum.
You might consider walking the Teesdale Way, from open moorland to industrial plains chock full of rare raptors, waders and sea birds - with High Force and Cauldron Snout thrown in for good measure. Takes 4-6 days.
Benalmadena for a week in October, it'll be our first holiday with our first grandson and I can't wait! Also having a fortnight in December in Indianapolis to reunite with our youngest son and meet his new in laws, can't wait for that either.
Have a mate in Cairns who we visit pretty regularly and always go on a reef trip. Favourite place we have been to view it though is Heron Island. First went there in 1969 and have re-visited it about half a dozen times since. Agree with you about the South Island of NZ - my wife is from the Lake District. One of the best holidays we have experienced only topped by a 3 week visit to China in 1978.
We did it in early June 2011. Advised by our B&B host, a local fell runner and resident expert, I carried rain gear, cold weather gear and food for an Antarctic expedition. Of course it was blisteringly hot and we'd have been better served with more water and less clobber. That said, if we hadn't had the gear, we would have needed it!
Saltspring is in a bit of a time warp and shouldn't really exist but thank god it does. Enjoy your time on the west coast and tell CanadaTiger he's going the wrong way (although he obviously has solid reasons for his decision). Consider Saskatchewan on a future visit. The beauty and historyare there but not as spectacular as other locations. A bit likethe East Riding
After leaving Hull in my early teens, I lived in Hurworth On Tees (home of Boro's brilliant training complex). From there, I have visited many local points of interest including some walks and hikes in the Dales. As a kid, on Batcheler St., in the fifties, I was fortunate that my dad had a car with his job and we went on trips into the East Yorkshire countryside. I have a desire to try and retrace some of those outings and also discover more about the places of my childhood.
My wife's grandmother had a holiday home on Saltspring when she lived in Victoria on Vancouver Island many years ago. Her dad lived there for a few years too.
I did that route in '91, Plum. Highway 1 - Pacific Coast Highway is superb. Big Sur (bar/restaurant called 'Nepenthe' was beaut; San Simeon (Randolph Hearst's old gaff) was overdone and expensive. Watch out in Death Valley - if you stop anywhere, the car will be ridiculously hot when you try to get back into it; cover the steering-wheel or you may not be able to touch it!. Vegas is hideous in daylight - we took a flight from McCarran airport, there, to the Grand Canyon Good luck and good times to you.
Yeah, we had that, in May - coming out of Yosemite to go over the pass into the Owens Valley. The road was closed and the Ranger said it didn't re-open until Memorial Day; said that if we drove north, the passes get lower and eventually (= 2 passes northwards) the road would be open. Won't affect you in July
I agree, Wells, Sandringham and the Broads are really nice too but my fave is North Yorkshire - love the places up there.
People go on about immigrants to the UK, living in ghettos, not speaking the language, not trying the local customs, not eating the food. Surely the influx of Brits to such areas in Spain is as much an example of that as any here? Little known fact - the busiest store in terms of sales in the entire Morrisons network is in Gibraltar. Why? Cos the thousands of Brits who live in Spain flock there to buy sausage rolls, pork pies and pasties.
